It's interesting being in the DC area. A lot of what I do is tied into the federal government, and I can be barred from federal employment for not being registered with the Selective Service. So that was one of the first sets of paperwork I sent off asking for an exemption. I don't know if I just didn't get something in the mail first because I beat them to the punch or what.
I do wonder what their procedures are going to be like now that they're allowing trans people to serve openly. I'm sure I'd still be able to enlist or commission despite the exemption, since the reason listed on my exemption paperwork was that I'm transsexual.

food for thought.. I work for the post office ( which has very good LGBT protection ) and i believe one of the requirements ( if you are male ) is to register for selective service during your appropriate time frame.. ( or any federal job for that matter )..
I don't know how the new trans friendly rules apply.. but if you are stealth in the future, could that trip you up during the background check ?
Sspar, I do background checks. You'd be outed to the person investigating you by a name change or any discrepancies between documents. But it doesn't matter much, as background investigators are usually contractors like me or in their own separate department and wouldn't be a direct supervisor of yours. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's not something that would cause you to fail a background check.
