A couple weeks ago I got a SS card, telling me to register. I was confused considering the website itself says I am not required to, but my MtF friends are (which I find hilariously stupid). I got the card and know if I even tried to the system would probably block me so I had to call in to figure out what to send and mail them the card along with other documents. I just got a letter back stating I'm exempt and am still tickled by this whole thing. Why I got it is weird enough but just a warning to other guys out there that you might get it too despite the fact that you legally aren't even required to sign up for the draft.

I'll preface this by saying I grew up in the military. That bring said the sexism involved in selective service has always been something I rolled my eyes at. Once I change my documents I'll probably get one.

I got one too but it didn't look legit so I set it aside. I've always wanted to be in the military, as my dad was in the Air Force, but due to medical reasons I know even if there was a draft they wouldn't pick me.

If the legitimacy of the card is in question, pick one up at the post office. Just this year, transgender people are allowed to serve, and there has been discussion on making females register for the draft.

food for thought.. I work for the post office ( which has very good LGBT protection ) and i believe one of the requirements ( if you are male )  is to register for selective service during your appropriate time frame.. ( or any federal job for that matter )..
I don't know how the new trans friendly rules apply.. but if you are stealth in the future, could that trip you up during the background check ?

It's interesting being in the DC area. A lot of what I do is tied into the federal government, and I can be barred from federal employment for not being registered with the Selective Service. So that was one of the first sets of paperwork I sent off asking for an exemption. I don't know if I just didn't get something in the mail first because I beat them to the punch or what.

I do wonder what their procedures are going to be like now that they're allowing trans people to serve openly. I'm sure I'd still be able to enlist or commission despite the exemption, since the reason listed on my exemption paperwork was that I'm transsexual.

Sspar, I do background checks. You'd be outed to the person investigating you by a name change or any discrepancies between documents. But it doesn't matter much, as background investigators are usually contractors like me or in their own separate department and wouldn't be a direct supervisor of yours. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's not something that would cause you to fail a background check.

This was just a PSA as I have no wish to join after my little stint. I can't do the whole 'listen first ask never' thing. I simply need information before, during, and after. I just got a card and called about it. The guy said I'm coming up and I guess its cause more legal documents are coming in as male so I got a little card. I was simply told to send it back with more stuff and got an exemption letter, more for FAFSA reasons when I enroll back in school and now my 1st generation broke self is gonna need loans.

Yeah, I seem to recall something about selective service and college.

I'm over 35 so who knows, I may need one of those special letters about having been exempt at the time.

Single sex draft is BS. Also the draft is BS because they have no intention of going back to it so everyone is forced to go through this red tape for nothing.

Yes, if you are an unregistered FTM and you have plans on doing anything that may require proof of registration (including financial aid for college, federal jobs, etc.) you ought to go ahead and get a "Status Information Letter" (what they call that letter, a link is provided to the page on their site) so you already have it on hand if and when the time comes.

I have the letter stating I'm free but I agree with you about the draft in general. The website and hold tune/messages make it sound like a great privilege, but it's practically idiotic. I read somewhere that they're thinking of making women sign up soon as well.

I was required to in order to receive my financial aid this summer...so now I'm registered with them. Against my will of course, I called the college and the recruiting office but no one had much to say on it. I just bit the bullet and signed away. (I hear if you have a split tongue body modification you're barred from serving, guess that works for me. )
