School bathrooms have become the front lines of legal and political battles over transgender rights in Canada and the U.S., but some of the students who actually use those bathrooms say their voices are getting lost amid the noise.

"It just feels like parents and teachers are taking over," says Oliver Bailey, a 16-year-old transgender boy from Calgary, where controversy has erupted over a new provincial education mandate that guarantees students have the right to self-identify their gender and use the bathroom of their choice.

Is this a glimpse of the future? A world, or at least civilized countries where we can pee in peace? One can only hope. And as they say, "out of the mouths of children."

I think it's a glimpse of the present.

Most people in most areas have no problem with this. It's a vocal few in  a few areas where diversity is not necessarily valued that are making the noise.

I live in Alberta (and have for my entire life) and I am not surprised. The opposition to this bill is coming entirely from adults and a small minority at that. It is primarily coming from conservative, Christian parents with less than average education levels. Most people in the province don't really have a problem with trans kids using the bathrooms of their choice. Even among those who are struggling with the legislation, most are opposed to the wording that says schools do not have to inform parents about their child's gender identity or sexual orientation (basically if a child comes out to a counsellor or teacher that information will be kept confidential). That said, the bigots are loud and angry... but this time the trans rights activists are equally loud and angry and most people are on our side.
