Georgia ACLU director resigns over transgender fight

Politics Blog/ June 2, 2016   | Filed in: Georgia Legislature, Nathan Deal, transgender bathroom.

The head of Georgia's ACLU chapter stepped down this week in protest of the civil rights group's challenge of a controversial North Carolina law that critics see as discriminatory to transgender people.

"Maya Dillard Smith told WABE's Martha Dalton that "it became clear that we were principally and philosophically different in opinion" over the ACLU's challenge of a North Carolina law that requires transgender people to use the public restroom at schools and other public places that matches the sex on their birth certificates.

She told Dalton that she wasn't necessarily opposed to the litigation, but said there was no room to "engage in dialogue" within the ACLU over the debate. (The local chapter has declined comment citing a personnel matter.)"
