Finding a Trans friendly Doctor

I am just starting my journey to getting hormone therapy.  I have a letter from my therapist, but she does not know of any doctors in the Corpus Christi area.  I would like to find one here, I called one doctor, but they were very rude and said that they do not do that.  I am willing to travel to San Antonio (2hrs away) or I can even go to Houston (I still have friends there who I can stay with).  Does anyone know of a doctor in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Or Houston area.  If it is in Houston, I would like it open on Saturday since I will have to drive 4 hrs.  Please let me know.

I can give you a tidbit of advice. First all the information a doctor would need to address the needs of a trans person is rite here on the internet written by doctors. You can print this out and educate any doctor so they can take care of you. As a matter of fact the dosages and blood tests are pretty much standardized.

So I go on to the most important part that of which many trans people starting out don't get. You going to the doctor as a boy is entirely different than a woman walking in and asking for medical care. The doctor is far more likely to take you seriously if you present to him a woman.

I cannot stress this enough. As a matter of fact the world as a whole is going to take you more seriously if you have your crap together.

I don't know is its just the student experience, but the care I've recieved here for my trans issues at university is exellent. Try seeking out a university hospital, perhaps?

I was going to recommend my doctor in McAllen, but I noticed you still haven't gotten the medical referral to an endocrinolgist. Some GPs are comfortable enough to write you out a script themselves but most prefer to refer you to the specialist.

Could your GP do it? If not, Planned Parenthood is a helpful place to ask for help. Give them a call.

I go en femme every time I go to houston and have never had a problem.  I am using the legacy clinic, dr vanack, on Montrose st in Houston.   My therapist referred me to her. Pm me if you need more info....

What your overlooking is the what a doctor is going to take you as. If a guy walks in to his office asking for female hormones its go get a letter. He cannot take that person seriously.............

Now if a girl walks into his office the proof is rite there before his eyes that that person is really doing what they claim to do.

There's an old phrase.....put your money where your mouth is. That means if you are asking a professional for services that related to a transsexual woman then your going to be taken seriously if you are visibly what you say you are. Talk is cheap.....

I agree with what Katie is saying.  I am still pre everything and present myself as who I am to every dr visit.  She took me very seriously and we had a timeline worked out on the 2nd visit and my letter.   Some say to do what makes you comfortable. .well if you are a woman inside then dont be afraid to present as one.  I mostly stick to public places when by myself or with one or more friends when out for drinks.

Crap I never even went to a therapist (except for three days prior to srs where I told him I thought it was a joke I was talking to him). I simply went to the doctor after doing my homework and asked him for the hormones. Mind you I presented myself as a woman to him. I had done my homework, I knew the dosages, and I had one other trick that I was ready to use but didn't have to. That was I was ready to show him I was already taking hormones.

It is difficult for a doctor to turn someone away taking hormones that is not under medical care. Has something to do with the oath they take.........

Katie, under most circumstances I would concur with your logic; however, being from the area and familiar with that stretch of the I-37 corridor, it could be very dangerous for her to present as her gender instead of her genotype. What if she needs to use a restroom on the way?! We're not talking very cosmopolitan or tolerant people (at least of the LGBT).All she has to do is bring up safety and the doctor should not let that get in the way of his or her judgment.

would recommend my endo in Houston but his office is only open during the weekdays
and i did not present female to him, i think i even had stubble which doesn't sound like me at all lol but i got hormones right away without getting a therapist letter.

I suggest asking an endo in Texas that is trans-friendly for a recommendation of one near where you live.

I would be happy to ask my endo, if you'd like.  He's been seeing trans patients for decades.  Although he may be less likely to have a suggestion, being in Michigan.

Also, when you do go to an appointment, go dressed however you want.  All of my appointments are either on the way to or from work.  I went in male clothes before I transitioned at work and in female clothes after I transitioned.

The fact that you have a letter from your therapist should be proof enough of your need for hormones.

I live in Tennessee currently and I was born in La Porte, TX. I've never met any rude people there to be honest. However I'm not use to the people there anymore, but I would go with Houston it's a pretty nice and safe area. Last time I was around in ole' Texas was visiting my old man and we went out to Houston. My old man is like... 6' 5" and I'm 5' 11" so no one really gave me any issues. I have a fairly small-medium frame and am quite passable, but the hands ughhhh anyway. It took me forever to get on hormones in TN. Like the therapists are just hard to deal with for my own and a few friends experiences. People in TX are easy to talk to, I wish you the best of luck girl! ^^
