It's summer time now, and I'll be back in school in two months. I'm wanting to go back as more androgynous but more on the feminine side, but I can't do anything with my voice as it is now. It's not entirely deep, people I ask seem say it isn't really that deep. It sounds deep to me though. I don't really want my voice to be all that high yet, just less masculine sounding if that makes sense? How high would I need to get it, and would two months be enough time to get there? Sorry if this post is all over the place, but thank you in advance.

Welcome to Susan's Place. With a trained voice it isn't linear. You work with the chest voice and the head voice but there is a break between the two. Singers learn how to make the break less noticeable but it's still there. The good news is that voices are complex. If you just raise the voice without the inflection, it will still sound male. The amount of inflection you add will change the perception of the voice from male to female. There may be a spot in the middle that will give you what you want. If you work at it every day, two months should be sufficient time to get the basics down. It may not be enough time to lock it in so you don't have to think about it but it would be a start.

We issue to all new members the following links so you will best be able to use the web site.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I just thought of a different question, isn't there something you can work on that make your voice not really higher but just less masculine? Resonance I think, or maybe that's something different. Is there a way to get rid of that without raising my actual voice and if so, would it make me sound less like a guy maybe? I'm sorry, I'm not very educated in voice training. I guess I should have been working on it all these years. I've had plenty of time.

You are going to get different answers to this question but in my view, resonance is pretty much a non issue. You can change the resonance a small amount in the mouth but most of the change in resonance comes from changing the position of you larynx as in when you use a trained voice. In other words, it's all part of the same package. I heard a voice that was pitch at 250HZ that didn't sound feminine and the average feminine pitch is 220HZ. The reason again was because it lacked inflection. The result would have been far better at the average or below average pitch with the proper inflection. I have worked with some FTMs on the site and one of the first things they need to do is talk in a more monotone voice. It's possible for many of them to sound like a pre puberty boy without testosterone but with the proper speech pattern.

To have an androgynous voice, you need to move the pitch out of the masculine region and put just enough inflection in it that the gender is questionable. I don't have an exact link for you to describe this but I have two links for you to look at.

Ah, okay! And thank you for the links! I really appreciate it. I'll get started on this right away. If you happen to come across the link you mentioned, could you let me know? Anyway, thank you very much again!

People don't normally ask for an androgynous voice. A few are happy to get it but for the most part, they are going male or female. The androgynous I have seen so far are more interested in dress that voice so this is new ground for me.

I guess it is kind of odd. It's just for school though, after that I'll keep working on it. I just don't want it to be too high while I'm at school.
