Hi all,

Well, it's been a loooooooonnngggg time since I've been here at Susan's. Happy to see it is still operating!

Recently, I have obtained insurance coverage that will authorize SRS/GRS. However the ONLY Dr. that they are contracted with is Dr. Maurice Garcia at UCSF. I am wondering if anyone has knowledge or information about his track record. All I seem to find is he seems to do more with FTM rather than MTF.

Any thoughts?

Hi Dawn, welcome to Susan's. I was thinking this might might due better in the SRS forum. I'm more than glad to relocate it for you. I'm not familiar with this person, but maybe someone else is. I look forward to seeing you around the forums. Good luck and Hugs

Hello and wb   :)

Well counting the o's it must have been quite a few moments  :)

http://transascity.org/quality-of-life-in-treated-transsexuals/

It seems he is more into FTM people.
I'd ask with him.. how many mtf people he has had srs with, and his technique...

and you might ask for coverage of other docs...
it might be possible they consent if costs are similar or lower...

it might also be possible to ask other docs... some are willing to help with getting coverage...

Laura,

Thank you for your reply.

I'll be certain to ask those questions. I have a consult with him in Sept and will be as apprehensive as a mouse in a room full of cats should I be his.........first  :-\ MTF.

Mariah,

I may be dense as a post, or just slow, but, Where is the "SRS Forum"?

Could you message me that link?

Thank you,

Dawn

Never mind. I just read the Terms about messaging. I understand!

StartingOver

Given the fact that SRS is a one chance surgery (not including minor revisions), it's important to get it pretty much right the first time.  Experience is the absolute most important thing a surgeon can have.  The big names in SRS have done procedures numbering well above 1,000 in many cases.  Some have far more than that.

Dr. Garcia would not be an acceptable choice for me, regardless of whether it was covered by insurance or not.  His UCSF profile shows that he's a urologist (nothing wrong with that, but his practice is hardly even vaguely focused on SRS), and he doesn't even really mention the fact that he performs SRS on his bio.  I could find no examples of his work, no reviews, etc.  Too much of an unknown entity for my liking, and when top class SRS can be paid for out of pocket for around $20,000, it's just not worth the risk.  For half that price, you can get pretty good SRS in Thailand all-in from an experienced surgeon (although not a top name).

The suspicious side of me wonders if this is a deliberate attempt by the insurance company to pick the most unattractive option for SRS, just so it can claim that it complies with whatever laws and regulations are forcing it to cover SRS without actually having to pay for many surgeries.

Having said that, if it's a choice between him and no SRS, then I'd certainly think twice.  For some, they could never afford "name brand" SRS and they have to take whatever is offered.  But I'd rather save and have proven SRS from a proven doc than spin the surgery roulette wheel and hope it lands on "nice vagina" instead of "wtf!"

It might be regional thinking. Like picking a person in their state.

As said...

I certainly appreciate and take your sentiments to heart. Believe me. I have NO intention of letting myself become a leg of lamb on a butcher's block, filleted with a dull cleaver.

Like those I've heard from so far including yourself I find scant little information concerning his background for MTF SRS. On the other hand, his FTM work seems quite well liked. I had an appointment with Dr. Satterwhite and only recently having been told that he is no longer an "in network provider". Truly a shame because I think his work shows quite well his talents.

Perhaps he's had some tutoring and experience for MTF that we're not aware of? Possibly. By who? I wish to know.

So, be assured. If I get even a little queasy in speaking with Dr. Garcia at my consult, being able to run....FAST, will be no issue. Insurance coverage or not! In any case, I'd be more than happy to report back here after the consult to offer an evaluation if anyone might be interested.

I'd love to hear the follow-up on how it all went!

I recently had an orchiectomy with Dr. Litwin, who's head of Urology at UCLA, and I guess they are close because Dr. Garcia flew down to assist with my surgery since Litwin wasn't familiar with what technique would preserve tissue the best in case I want vaginoplasty in the future. I'm very happy with how it all went, and they were both very nice.

I just spoke on the phone recently with Dr. Garcia about potentially going with him for a labiaplasty without vaginoplasty. He was again really nice to talk to and seemed to know what he was talking about, yeah I haven't been able to find any testimonials or w/e, though I understand that as a researcher at a big institution they don't have as much incentive as a private practice to go about advertising all of that.

He obviously isn't as experienced as Marci Bowers, sure, but he seemed to know enough that I'm probably going to be moving forward with him, unless I can find any bad stuff. I'm be speaking with him again soon and will ask more pointedly for testimonial type stuff, examples of his work, etc.

I'll probably also go with him bc there isn't a ridiculous wait time, and my insurance is through the University of California and they have AMAZING benefits, so I only pay either 10% or whatever the remainder of my annual out of pocket cap is, which is $2,000. I fracking love this insurance.

I would love to know if you went with him, or if not then what your reservations were :)
