Tired of looking androgynous...when will I change?
October 03, 2016, 11:03:03 AM
I just had a bad break up with a man I was seeing...told me that once I look like a man he would stop seeing me. So we said a few choice things to each other and I left. Basically he told me I'm looking like I'm between a man and a woman. Then today I went into the convenience store and the clerk asked if I'm a he or a she. The problem is I've been on testosterone for almost 5 months. My voice is even still androgynous. I'm sick of this! When will I see some changes? I'm Tired of hetero men coming into me and viewing me as a woman.

Puberty is such a bummer. I can only speak to MTF, but my changes did not happen overnight. My breasts and nipples took forever! and I am glad I did not get BAS. I'm sure that being told to be patient is cold comfort when you are hurting, but it does get better. Truly it does. Being on E stabilized my mood, but the full effects were also not immediate.
Sorry to hear about your man friend. That has to hurt.

For some people, it takes a bit. Typically most FTMs pass at least in terms of appearance by the 1 year mark. Voice may take longer. Also consider that your mannerisms may have an impact on how strangers gender you.
At the end of the day, if you think you're not masculinizing quickly enough, you should probably have lab work done and review your dose with your doctor to be sure everything is good there.

It can take a year or longer for people based on genetics, facial features, body build or even something we do without noticing like body language or mannerisms.
If you think it's your hormones, you might want to get your levels checked.

I feel your frustration. I'm six months on T and haven't passed once. But I think that's actually pretty typical for 5/6 months on T. It's a struggle to stay patient.

I didn't look simply male until I was 7/8 months on T. I know how frustrating the wait is but it's so worth it in the end. My voice didn't start sounding totally masculine unil this time as well. Try to focus on the things that do look male on your body instead of just what your face looks like.
They/them pronouns preferred.

In the grand scheme of things, five months is pretty short. The offset of many changes is 2-5 years, so you have plenty of time. I know I have self-esteem issues even 20 months on T, but when I hear opinions from others, they see a lot of things I don't even notice anymore. Try reaching out to some friends and see what they say 🙂

5 months is a short period of time. However, I agree with FTMax. If you're worried the changes aren't happening at a normal pace, at least have your levels checked. I started out being gendered both ways before T. I'm almost a year now, and I still pass about the same amount. My doctors haven't checked my hormones since before prescribing T, so I'm 100% in the dark about my treatment. 😕
