Okay so I got my 6th shot yesterday. My girl did the first 3 with 1 inch needles and ive done that last 2 with 1.5" needles because the extra length freaks my girlfriend out lol. Well yesterday I got back to the 1 inch needle and did it myself because my girlfriend was working. As soon as I pulled the needle out a huge bead of blood formed and I wiped it with my finger and then another bead came out and start running down my leg. I only bled for a few seconds before it stopped but I've been freaking myself out because I've never done it before. The injection site is sore this morning. I usually have soreness/tenderness the first couple days after my shot. I can't tell if it feels worse than usual or if im just freaking myself out. Can someone just tell me if this has happened to them? And not only that, but I've seen a lot of people who have done it but no one can answer this question for me. If I hit a vein or a blood vessel, does that mean that my T dose didn't actualy make it into my muscle and I kinda just wasted my 6th shot? The needle was all the way in my leg. I just want to know if I hit the muscle or if I just wasted a injection. I know no one can actually know if I hit my muscle, but some other experiences and opinions would be great.

Thanks all,

Mackenzie

That happens to me frequently. As long as you pulled the plunger back and didn't aspirate any blood, you're okay.

If it hurts you may have had tense muscles when you did the shot.

Also, one time I put the needle in and it really hurt a lot! Must have hit a nerve. Tried a different location and way less pain. Of course it's a risk to re-stick because the needle dulls a lot every time you use it.

It is very common if you're injecting into the quads. I've never had that issue with glutes (by far preferable, all around). There are many more veins in the legs than the gluteal area (nerves also). When you bleed like that, it means you've passed directly through one. But the T will, usually, have been deposited lower than that point (muscles only have capillary, or very tiny, veins. You won't see any blood coming up from them). As long as you're not getting blood in the barrel, you're alright (and your T, of course, will still work as ever).

Even though they now say you don't have to aspirate (pull back a bit when you're in), I do and will always do so. Better safe than sorry. Oil does not, ever, belong in the vascular system. Most other IM substances are not suspeneded in oil... which makes them a non-issue for this, however that is NOT true of T (which is oil-based).

Everybody injecting IM in the quads SHOULD still aspirate, given that there are so many more veins there, than the recommended injection site (glutes). Those doing SubQ, needn't bother (so small of a dose and so shallow there won't be any risk of hitting a vessel).

As long as you had no blood when you pulled the plunger back you should be fine. I sometimes bleed after I do my shot, so nothing unusual. The first time it surprised me. The worst I had was when I nicked a vein going in. Had a big yellow bruise for a week, but nothing g major.

Once a quarter or so I have a really bloody injection. No rhyme or reason to it. I never have any pain with them, and they feel no different than ones that don't bleed. I've never done a second shot afterwards. I figure enough of it is in there that it's not going to matter too much in the grand scheme of things.

For the soreness, try sitting flat on the floor with your legs out while you inject and massaging the leg afterwards. You could also try icing your leg before and after the shot, but I don't think that did too much for me.

I inject in the thigh weekly and all this has alleviated the soreness. As far as aspirating, I don't do it.

I sometimes get a drop or two of blood (or T) seep out directly after each injection. I press down firmly on the injection site with a cotton ball and then apply a small spot band aid to it. I then massage my thigh a little depending on whether or not the injection caused a bit of pain. The band aid usually gets a bit more blood on it by the time I remove it for a shower, but nothing extreme.

The only time my thigh bled more than normal was when I had a muscle spasm mid injection (random muscle spasms are normal for me, never had it happen with a needle in me before though). Where a drop or two of blood would be on the band aid, this time soaked the absorbent pad on it. Had a sore leg for a few days after that one.
