Hey guys, so I'm FtM and I'm only 16. I dont have much help from family and whatnot with this either because while they aren't unsupportive they kind of just ignore it and brush everything off.

While I've somehow been referred to as sir/son before by strangers a time or two my hair is very long and I'm done procrastinating with this.

However the reason my hair has been long my whole life is because for lack of better words I'm scared to cut it. I'm really sketchy about cutting my hair because I'm always worried it wont look good and I'm horribly indecisive.

So I wanted some opinions.

Here are pictures of me/my hair and how I normally wear it.

Thanks for any help

Well good news; long hair suits you and you still look like a masculine guy; although on the adrogyny side. If you want to ease into getting your hair cut short you could look at this for inspiration http://www.fashionbeans.com/2014/mens-long-hairstyle-trends/.  IMO I think an undercut with a fringe looks best to make you look male as women still haven't acquired this type of hairstyle yet.

If I saw you on the street with your hair pulled back like that I wouldve thought you were some surfer dude punk rock type. It looks great on you. Generally, my advice with Pre T guys is to be careful not to go too short as it will make your hairline very obvious and people will see you as a masculine lesbian (no offense, but that is what ive been called before when pre T with a buzz cut).

Wow thats the haircut I have and i didnt even know what it was called haha. Not sure if it would suit this pre T guys, I would suggest leaving the sides a lot longer. I passed more when I had kind of a early days Zach Efron length haircut.

Hey Trojan :). I think with longer sides with a round face it'll just make your face look wider whereas with shaved sides it makes your face look thin. And yeah I had the Zach Efron type haircut which seems to be recommended a lot for pre T guys but I think it just made me look like a boy at best and an unfashionable awkward boy at worst; because it's not an 'in fashion' hairstyle. Whereas something like an undercut looks grownup.

Just my opinion.

Ellis, it's very hard to look like an adult man or "grown up" when you're pre T. I passed 99% of the time, you know why? Because everyone thought I was a 15 year old boy. It would aggravate me because people would always call me "buddy" or "pal" and in the same breath address my male friends as "sir". However, I was so grateful to at least be recognized as male that I tried not to pay much attention to it. I've known a 32 year old transguy who was pre T and passed wonderfully, however it was because people thought that he was still in highschool. Funny thing was, when he told people his age, they tended to put two and two together that he was AFAB. I feel like you may have meant "mature" when you said grownup, and I found that using gel to slick the top over effectively made it look mature. However, that was a "mature" 15 year old boy rather than a "juvenile" 15 year old boy. Still not "grown up" per se.

This is just me trying to share my experience with guys who are early in their transition. I have been called a "bull dyke" by a cashier when I was walking out of the store. Might I add that I had a "round face" as well as hair the length of the sides of that undercut. It did not make my face look thin, it accentuated my feminine facial features and made me go from "boy" to "hyper masculine woman". Definitely not to "grownup".  That being said, what worked for me might not work for everyone. Probably the most important thing is to have a haircut that you like, that makes you feel confident, that doesn't make you feel self conscious, and that helps you express your masculinity.

I personally think you already look very adrogynous-masculine with long hair, I wouldn't assume you were female if I walked past. If you want to cut it id recommend looking up "trans guy haircuts" on youtube, that helped me a lot before cutting mine. Also if the hair stylist knows you want a masculine haircut that'll help, otherwise they might go for a feminine short one. Good luck :)

I think the undercut is tricky - may also vary on popularity based on where you live. Here, a lot of butch lesbians go for the undercuts / partially shaved head thing (and I know lots of cool lesbians but I'm not amongst them). There are hipster guys here who do the undercut too, but often with full on beards, and variants with top knots.

I'm pre-T and everything else. I had my hair cut about a month ago into something mid-length that is probably closer to the Zac Efron style than anything else. The trick is trying to figure out what you're most comfortable doing, and how much weight you're putting on passing. For me, I'm caring a bit less about passing and more comfort with this transition, since I've had really long hair for about twenty years. I also really don't want to pass as a lesbian either. Nor did I want a pixie cut.

Definitely check out lots of pics, and the good thing is that it's hair and it grows.

Anxiety and fear is why I never cut mine, I was threatened several times when I was a kid to get my hair cut really short "like a boy" if I didnt take care of my long hair. I cried and was worried about how weird it would feel

I got better at taking care of the hair thing, but didnt like it too long. Was pretty apathetic though for the longest time. I finally discovered that upon looking at pictures of myself I did not like it longer so Ive been experimenting with keeping it shorter for a long time. Its currently compromised at medium length but I want to go shorter in the future still...

Dont know why Im telling you that just yhought Id let you know hair anxiety is normal

Yeah, I can relate.... I've got the most anxiety about the hair so far in all this. Not coming out, not facing a name change, or thinking about T or potential surgeries. I think hair has been such a big part of my identity for the last twenty years it's really a dramatic change for me. And judging by the reactions of the folks around me who have known me a long time, for them as well. And I have the fear if I go on T I'll lose my hair.  But that last one is an anxiety for future me.

But I get the struggle about hair!
