Well... The darker the hair and the lighter the skin the better it works.  My greying hairs are almost gone but the white ones, although seemingly smaller, need electrolysis but I am very happy with the combo of both.

So far as I know, electrolysis is it for gray colorless hairs.

The laser needs to put out light that will be absorbed by the hair follicle and not by surrounding tissue, so it transfers energy to the follicle, killing it, without harming the other tissue.  A gray hair has no coloring, that is, it doesn't absorb selected colors like black, brown, or red hairs do.  With colored hair, a laser can be tuned to emit a color the hair will absorb while minimizing damage to other tissue.

I wish it were otherwise.  I REALLY wish it were otherwise.

No new technology in laser. Sadly so...and laser does not work on grey hairs as per Michelle very good description.

My experience has been similar to what the others speak to. Additionally, it seems that my colorless hairs are thicker than my pigmented ones. So a ton of huge tree roots coming out, as my electrologist jokes.

My experience has been similar to that related by other responders too. I initially tried several laser sessions with no luck because my facial is white so electrolysis has been the only option There have been quite a few dark colored hairs among the regrowth which We've zapped with laser. While laser has worked on the dark ones it's puzzling that dark hairs have appeared at all and I wonder if that is due to the Finasteride. Whatever the case I am hoping for more of them. Electrolysis will definitely test one's resolve

I have also found that laser works on dark hairs but not on grey or white. I have also experienced what Trish has mentioned, laser treatments have actually stimulated some of my grey hair enough to regain some of their color. After my 4th, 5th and 6th treatment, more dark hairs grew back than had been there before. While this may just be an aberration in hair growth cycles, my electrologist  has seen it enough to have named it laser bounce back. Next week is my second marathon full face clearing session. Interesting responses.  I have (or had, good riddance) dark brown facial hair until some went grey others went white.  The grays ones and the dark ones are gone, mostly.  Now I have lots of white ones left.  It is very possible that the grey ones went white and that is what I see now. 

I should have done this in the nineties before the grey broke out.

Keep in mind that laser hair removal is not totally definitive. As far as I know the only way to have a truly permanent hair removal is electrolysis.

I am in the same situation. Have had 8 rounds of laser to get rid of the most of the remaining dark hairs and so far about 10 hours of electrolysis. The area below my lower lip is finally starting to feel free of hair and it is one of the most exciting things I have ever felt. Wish I could do more faster!

They can use colored dyes to laser the lighter hairs. I have no idea how effective it is... but it may be worth a shot. If nothing more than to reduce the amount of electrolysis needed.

I don't know how true this is but my Psychologist and I were chatting about this and she claims to have read a medical article where they are developing lasers to target hair with the lighter pigmentation ...grey hairs is supposed to be the focus. Sorry no detail other than that she can't even remember where she read it. I have about 60% Black and the rest grey...Laser to target the black and Electrolysis to target the grey. good luck

ADENA IPL light hair removal treatment (lastest technology) starts next week , have had 1 small treatment as a test,
This treatment requires waxing of the face (hurts like hell!) but so far good results regarding removal of grey and white hair by laser.
To keep the cost down I paid 8 sessions up front.
Will keep you posted on results

Can find no one here in Adelaide that will do it but I see there is one in QLD. I will be very interested as to hear about your results. The biggest thing that concerns me is the waxing the face and what damage that will do to the follicle. If the follicle is damaged but doesn't kill the hair then treating with electrolysis is supposed to be very difficult...but having said all that if you kill the hair follicle with IPL then job done the information I read says that waxing sets up and injury and then the IPL laser interrupts the healing and the follicle dies...I would love to find a way to get my greys dealt with other than Electrolysis.If it works it sounds great

From what I know, I am in doubt that IPL kill the follicles.

The test treatment went well ,there was some redness for a few days and then some pimples for a few weeks.
The test area is still clear 5 weeks later .

Having a full treatment next week so will keep you posted .
