How did you decide which surgeon?

Hi all,

So from my last post on this topic, unfortunately I've found that my current health insurance (through my wifes' employer) has an exclusion for gcs.... which sucks......

The bright side is I am going to try to pick up insurance through my employer at the first of the year, which *does* cover gcs so I'm not completely out of luck.  The premiums are higher but worth it now....

So, while I'm waiting I'm trying to make a decision on who I would like to go with and it's kind of making my head spin.  It's such a huge thing and I want to make the right decision.  Since I'm the queen of second guessing myself I would love some input as to how others came to that decision.

I originally liked McGinn, and still do but wonder if I should look into someone else too.  There is also the surgeon here in Indy, local is always appealing, but I still need to confirm her price as it seemed *very* high.  Going overseas is appealing because of the price.  While cost is important it's not really at the top of my list, I'm more concerned with it being done right...

Anyway, I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter, how did you come to a decision?

Went to Brassard because he's the only one covered by my provincial insurance. I wasn't too concerned since he is one of the top performing GRS surgeon in N.America and I am happy with my result, functional and all.

I drew up a list of priorities, both for the results (looks, function, etc.) and the logistics (US, cost, etc.) and ranked both in terms of what I cared about most. It turned out that a) I did not want to go overseas and b) my preferences for the looks matched what North American doctors were doing, so that was one question answered immediately. Then I ruled out any North American doctors who were either too far away or had *really* consistently terrible reviews. I looked at the results coming from several of the big names, and picked the ones whose outcomes seemed to most closely and reliably match what I wanted (in my case, I cared most about sensation/function, then looks, then depth). There were two at that point who were both in line with what I wanted and reasonably priced, but one had a BMI limitation, so that was out.

I'm happy to tell you which doctor I went with if you want to know, but it's not relevant to the question of how to pick one - your priorities might be different from mine.

Hi Emjay  ;D

I am often asked this question, For me there were limitations on available skin which were going to seriously compromise my chances of having a good result. Surgeons in the UK who performed penile inversion told me I'd be lucky to get any depth so even though I now know for certain and at the time was fairly sure an experienced Thai surgeon who performed penile inversion could have done something I decided I needed the non penile inversion technique. From there I had 2 choices and went the way I did and got mostly what I wanted.

When I advise people who like you are confused by the choices available to them my usual advice is to start by deciding if they want penile inversion or non penile inversion and this really comes down to your body. If you are a reasonable size, Have not had either an orchi or circumcision and have not been on hormones for a long period (5+ years) chances are an experienced skilled surgeon will give you good results. The advantages of penile inversion are shorter operation and speedier recovery, Greater choice of surgeons and the technique has been performed for many years. Once you know what you want you should decide where you would like the surgery performed, This could be decided for you if the insurance you get only covers your home country.

Once you know the technique and the geographical are you are looking at then you can start comparing surgeons based upon results and your own instincts about them but I would suggest that if you can you chat to them and get a feeling about them. One persons experience of someone will not be the same as yours because we are all different and see things differently.

Hope that helps you. With luck you'll get your insurance and be on your way to happiness  ;D

Thank you all for the replies, I really appreciate it.

Jenna Marie, it sounds like my priorities are pretty much in line with yours.  I've considered overseas but I'm not crazy about the idea either.  As far as ranking what is important to me we're very similar.  Just from reading posts here, if I'm not mistaken, you went to Brassard as well correct?  I've also looked at him but had wondered about going out of the country and insurance (either reimbursement or direct coverage).  It's been a very long time since I've been to Canada (pre-9/11, homeland security, etc) but I think going there from the U.S. isn't that big of a deal other than you now have to have a passport versus when I went there last....  Brassard is (relatively) geographically close to me too, which is appealing.

Something else I thought I should have mentioned in my original post after I posted it:  I will have to consider who is acceptable to insurance as well, so that might also narrow down my options as in your case jfong.

I hadn't thought of that Sorcha.  I've been on HRT for nearly 2 1/2 years, have not had an orchi but am circumcised.  I was always told I'm, um, not small in the past...  Not that I made it a point of comparing.  So I guess that works in my favor.....  I'm hoping that will come up in consultation, what a particular surgeon believes the outcome will be from past experience.

Thank you all again, I really appreciate the insight.  It really helps!

Emjay: Yes, I went with Brassard, and he did a superb job of fulfilling my priority list. I didn't have any trouble getting in and out of Canada, either. I'm not sure about the insurance aspect, but I *think* he is certified by one US state so that he would theoretically be eligible (I just don't know of anyone who tried, much less actually got insurance to reimburse them). Still, with the Canadian dollar weak right now, he's about $15,000 US, and he does do a very good and very consistent job.
