I usually get my hair cut a town over with a very friendly barber. She's used to working with kids and such so doesn't mind me being anxious. For some reason I have a huge fear of getting clocked or misgendered when I get my hair cut and ending up leaving looking exactly how I didn't want to look.

Right now I can't afford to go to my usual barber and I have to basically stick with the barber in my town. The problem is there's only two decent barbers, both on the rough side of town who are pretty expensive and people I know who will happily antagonize me tend to stick around those parts. I'm desperate for a haircut and I feel like crap because, well, I look like crap. What should I do? I tried shaving the sides and it made a bit of a difference but I'm still pretty fluffy and it's driving me insane.

Is there a way to find an LGBT barbers or emailing an LGBT centre to see if they know of anyone trans friendly? Or look up YouTube tutorials on how to cut hair yourself.

I'm too afraid to go to a regular barbers because of the same reasons so I go to an LGBT barbers. I know I'm lucky to have one but I would like to be able to go to a regular barbers without fearing my safety.
They/them pronouns preferred.

With cutting your own hair, practice makes perfect. Although you wouldn't get it quite right, for a bit of time especially the image you have in your head of what you want to go for and the actual cutting or shaving, never really goes together.
I know this due to my earlier army career days as I wanted to save money, and so with a pair of clippers in hand, I tried to cut my own hair, but always so happens I had to just shave all of it off because of lopsidedness and well never a good way to cut all the different angles as my hair grows wild mostly.

Have you tried the more name brand shops such as super cuts, or great clips, etc... I know they would never be on par with a true barber shop, but they would probably have the same discrimination clauses as does drug stores and such.

Maybe even your best bet would be instead of doing a walk in to any place, you could call in advance and set up your appointment with your name, and then go as such.

do you have a friend or family member who would be willing to help you? I don't know how fancy you keep your hair but it's fairly easy to work clippers if you keep it short. I have a home wahl clipper kit that comes with different number guards and all, and my mom would run that across the back and sides for me and I'd trim the top/front myself.
