Perhaps a Canadian can verify, but i thought Ontario had laws protecting people from this sort of thing.

In the news account I read, he was fired for missing work shifts.  Employers can always find a way to hide the real reason for firing someone.  If he files a human rights complaint (which I hope he does), he will have to prove to the tribunal that he was fired for being trans regardless of what the employer said.

The law only protects you if you can prove that you were fired for a prohibited reason.
