Buying my first bra

Ok ladies...

Here's another important question from a new trans woman. How do I pick the right bra and how do I fill it out?  I remember as a kid using toilet paper to stuff bras. There's got to be a better way. 😉

There are inserts you can buy to fill them out if you need to. I don't know how far along you are with growth (from HRT), but I'd maybe recommend starting out with a bralette if you're just looking for something that fits whatever size and want a bit of lift and shape. I got a nice calvin klein bralette on Amazon when I first started.

I also bought my first actual bra from TheBraCompany, but found they were meant more for petite women (I'm 130lb, and 34/36 for my band size depending on cup. They were still crazy small!). My first comfy bra was a demi / tshirt bra from VS.

For proper fitting you can look up how on the internet. If you're planning on filling it with inserts maybe just get your band size and order an A to start (that way you can grow into it as well). You can also go to various stores for getting measurements taken. Nordstrom is amazing at this (but maybe buy from someplace cheaper, lol).

Have you had any breast growth, and if you're on hormones are you looking for a bra that you can use breast forms to completely compensate for a lack of tissue, or a bra with breast form that you can use to augment any growth that you have/will have.

We also could be more helpful if we know you're goal and use scenario.

They make bras and breast forms for women who have had a mastectomy. They also make them for cross dressing (think being able to sleep in it) and for those of us who are in transition.

They have systems for both forms that slip into the bra (like a pocket) and also breast forms that you can adhere directly to your skin.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the products beyond this, however this info should help anyone else to give more detail.

I guess I should have prefaced that I have not started HRT yet, so on the outside I'm still a 100% male. I need to make my Dr appt to start the process. I have literally in the last week came to the decision that I wanted to persue HRT. I'm just more wondering about how to size? I also wanted to know how I would look with different sized breasts. So that when it came time for TS (if I needed it) I'd have an idea of what I wanted as far as a size went.

Ohhh my input probably isn't as useful yet, in that case. As far as breast size, some find having BA helps with passing. I've heard having larger breasts can also help people with larger ribcages feel a bit more comfortable. Who knows though, maybe you'll be blessed with a size you'll love.

I really wish I could help more, but my knowledge regarding inserts/breast forms doesn't go much further than my knowing they exist (my partner just commented to me that she saw some on Etsy ).

I'm excited for you with starting HRT, it was a really fun experience to go though. Some of it is a little uncomfortable; it can be a little scary at times too..with wondering how well you'll benefit/ develop. BUT, I'm certain  you'll be happy. It was easily the best decision I ever made. I really hope you'll find it to be the same.

I have never stuffed my bras, I have a few that I bought for when I dress, I am just waiting to be able to fill them myself, its fun waiting, and you must have patience. I find it highly rewarding. Everytime I put one on I fill em a little more, like a cup with a drip of water falling in each day, eventually we will get ther :3

In my CD days, I made myself breast forms.  I was pretty handy with a sewing machine, so I sewed shaped forms out of stretchy T-shirt material, and stuffed them with cotton.  They wouldn't have fooled anyone trying to cop a feel, but they looked good.

I was able to make my own forms myself and they were quick and easy.  They also had the heft and approximate weight of breast tissue.  I used them for quite a while up to the time I had my B/A.

I took a pair of pantyhose and cut off the legs a little above the foot.  I filled each leg with rice, then tied off at the top of the foot and trimmed the excess.

I believe I learned that each cup size of breast tissue was approximately one cup of rice.  Though its very easy to experiment to get the size the you want.  You can also google for tips about breast size and weight to get pointers.  And its easy enough to adjust if you don't cut too close to the knot.

Then I would put the bra on and then put the bags in the cups and push them into a pleasing shape.  I would usually place the knot of the bag next to my nipple so the bra had a smooth shape.  Though you could place the knot facing outward if you want to show off your "high beams".

It's fast, easy, and cheap!

Dear Alora,

Welcome to the club. When I started out before HRT I've used NuBra which gave me a pretty impressive cleavage for someone who only had smallish man boobs. Together with a A-cup push up bra and some rather simple makeup skills (for your chest area) you can make it look quite big. There are tons of YouTube videos about that topic as you're by far not the only one out there.

I used to wear breast forms. Over the years I have had many including some VERY expensive ones. For me, it was rare that I could wear them for more than a few hours before they needed to go away. It wasn't until very recently that I realized that they only made my dysphoria worse. I was able to find bras in AA and AAA cup sizes and have worn them exclusively since I came out. I feel so much better being natural.

Though I had worn bras before, I had my first bra fitting about a year before you posted this.  I'd say find a good bra shop and let them help you find what you need.

Lol oki so with bras, they are very tricky. Honestly, you just sort of have to try on different brands because something you'll be a C cup in one brand but then like a D cup in another brand. Me personally at almost 1 year of transition I'm sitting at a nice, 36D. Now my boobs have filled out some but there is still some conical shape to them, and I still have my breast buds (which are rather large), but I fill out my D cup bra completely, and I'm probably going to need the next size up in 2  - 3 months. But honestly, breast forms can help or fillets if you're just starting out, or a sports bra that has some molded cups to them so it gives a bit more shape to your breasts while you're growing and filling out.
