I am finishing up my name and gender change items. I need to change my name on my will (including power of attorney and living will) and change my name on my house deed. I am told to change my existing will will be $1300 and the house $350 to $400. Anyone know if that is reasonable? Is it possible to do it cheaper?

Is it me or does everyone seem to have their hand out (for money) when transgender stuff is the issue?

Sorry for a boring post!

Monica

I don't know about the house deed, I need to do that one too. That sounds awful steep for a will, though. Shop around is my advice.

That does sound high.  I am having my will drawn up now and I got a bit of a bargain with a lawyer friend, but even other attorneys I have talked to will draft a will for $800 or less.  Most of the name change stuff is administrative anyway.  There might be some filing fees and notary fees, but you should be able to get it done for less.

If you live in or near a city with a strong LGBT community, you could seek out a lawyer  in the community who might be more knowledgable

It's probably cheaper to create a new will.

Is that just for the lawyer or does that include filing fees?

If you use a "quitclaim deed" to change your name on the deed (which you could usually do on your own without needing a lawyer's help) it shouldn't cost more than for the form, notary, and filing fees.

While you're shopping around you may want to consider a quick holographic will.

I read about a holographic will for a very large estate holding up in court once where a man had simply written on a piece of paper. "Everything to my wife."
It all depends on the state you're in tho, I think.

Change a name on your will? How about $10? Just grab your old one, type it in Words with the new name, print 3 copies, notarized them and send a copy to your old attorney advising the old will is no longer valid and 'please have the new one' for your records.

House title should probably cost about $200-300, but you should be able to do it yourself. Just go to your town or county (who holds those records) and ask their procedure on name change.
