Being 2 months into RLE, gender correction surgery has recently moved me from "No way on earth will I ever go there" to "Wow, when can I get this done". Somewhere in between I was impressed to learn that US Medicare will even cover it. Searching through the archives on this topic I see a lot of gals requesting information on reputable surgeons that accept Medicare but I haven't heard any clear messages that it is really an option. Either there are no responses to the queries or mention is made of a doctor or two that have no experience but are willing to learn on any needy volunteers. Can anyone clarify the issue? Are there any good experienced gender correction surgeons out there that accept Medicare? Or lacking that, is it possible to obtain and pay for the surgery and then get some part of the costs paid back by our loving supporting government? I look forward to any guidance on this topic. - Anne

I haven't been on medicare long enough to know all the ins and outs but the big catch would be your supplemental policy. Without the correct supplemental policy, you could be on the hook for a fair amount of money. I wasn't overly careful when selecting my policies as I don't need the surgical coverage but if you do, read all the paper work. The following links should be what you are after.

Currently Medicare's blanket restriction for transitional related surgeries (gcs, ba, and ffs) has been lifted. For traditional Medicare (not advantage) Medicare does not have a national policy of coverage, rather reviews each case on a case by case basis. The good part of this is Medicare uses wpath standards of care for approval/denial.

Check out www.transmedicare.com for more details and their section on known surgeons that accept Medicare.

Also a few months ago legislation was passed so that no Medical provider could deny care based on gender identity.
This goes into effect January 2017

This is important as for a long time (since ban was lifted in 2014) Medicare had the reputation of approving coverage but reimbursement for gcs was less than an orchie.

The result of this was that surgeons who did perform gcs, and accepted Medicare simply refused services for Medicare patients wanting GRS.

What that legislation means is if they now refuse based on reimbursement rates they are at risk for losing their Medicare contract. This is Very good news for us, as the incentive for the surgeon's billing department to fight for market rate reimbursement is in their court, and not on the patients.

The current status  for coverage is here
