Hi everyone, I am scheduled to have my GCS on this Feb. 14th but am unsure about my authorization as I have not been able to contact the Southern California Transgender Care Coordinator since 12/20/16.  It turns out that Anna Pitinyan left the department and was replaced by Annie L. Peatross on 12/23/16.

I am getting very worried because I feel that I am out of the loop and don't know what's going on with my auth.  I have contacted Dr. Meltzer's office and they are doing everything they can to help but I really need to get in contact with Kaiser.  The only number I have is 323-783-0575.

What worries me most, is that my authorization for Pre-surg Electrolysis for the 3 month period prior to my surg. was missed, and I have been paying for it myself until I can get a auth. from Kaiser.

My therapist, also from Kaiser has sent my request to speak with Annie via email earlier last week and urges me to be patient as she has many other patients needing to speak with her.  But this no response for almost 3 weeks is really scaring me.

Does anyone have advise that may help.

Thank you
Katie

Two days ago, I finally got a call from my new Kaiser "Transgender Coordinator" and things are kind of back on tract.

Because of the change over from the old coordinator to the new one, and that both were on vacation (One, the last part of Dec. and the other, the first two weeks of the new year).  There were no support services available, which put everything back about a month.

Though I was not told that visits with my PCP, Endocrainologist and Therapist were required to be done within three months prior to my surgery on 02/14/17, I went ahead and scheduled them all for this week, just in case.  All I was told was that I needed to see my Mental Health Provider within 30 days of my surgery, and to keep current with all my other providers.  Not told what current meant.

For months leading up to today, I had been periodically contacted my providers to ask if I needed to come in for a consult/evaluation.  All told me that it was not necessary, but now it is.  Wow, I just wish someone would have said something.  Then I would have had all these things done months ago.

Now everything is a rush to the finish line.

Moral of the story, You need to do most things yourself, anticipate what they want, and never assume they will do what they say they will.  Instead of asking them if you need to come in for an evaluation, make an appointment and insist that they do it.

Thank goodness you were able to get this back on track!

Yeah, the Kaiser program appears to be something that looks great on paper, but is lacking in implementation.

I find that I have to be my own services coordinator even at my early stage of treatment. I changed primary care providers to one that is LGBT-friendly, and found that she'll actually put requests through to the Multi-specialty Transitions clinic. I got my electrolysis coverage request through all the way to the screening dermatologist. Time for photos of my hairy face!

Now, I wonder how I'll get a trach shave, FFS, and GCS done, though. The therapist I was seeing "retired" from Kaiser and went independent. I need to poke her about some letters, I suspect.

In matters as personal and important as our medical treatment I don't think we really should rely on anyone else, and have to coordinate our own care.  We have an incentive others won't share.

My personal transition path included medical changes.  The path others take may require no medical intervention, or different care.  We each find our own path. I provide these dates for the curious.
Electrolysis - Hours in The Chair: 238 (8.5 were preparing for GCS, five clearings); On estradiol patch June 2016; Full-time Oct 22, 2016; GCS Oct 20, 2017; FFS Aug 28, 2018; Stage 2 labiaplasty revision and BA Feb 26, 2019
