My profile pic is whimsical, but not what I want.

I want it to look more like the real me.

I want to buy some makeup; not online, at the store.

My fear is getting the better of me.

Help. :(

I went to the store with a trans friend, me in boy mode.  She told me what products I needed, and the store clerk picked out colours that would suit me.  The clerk was totally professional.  We told her that the makeup was for me, and she didn't bat an eye.

I am told that this is normal.  They want to sell you lots of makeup, and a new customer buying the full kit can make their day.  They don't care who you are, only what colour your money is.  My experience was in a regular drugstore, not any fancy-pants makeup store.  I'm sure you will get even better service in the high-end stores.

If you have someone who can go with you for moral support, by all means bring them along.  But don't be afraid to go alone if that is your only option.  Don't pretend that it is for a friend.  They will need to know that it is for you in order to recommend the appropriate colours.

Good luck.  You can do it.

We can be told they don't care, but when we get raised as males in this society we are conditioned to find buying make up a big joke unless you're presenting as feminine. So while I'm thinking they must think it's hilarious, I laugh on the inside myself and think you know what, I find it funny too. But it is what it is. That way they can't possibly say anything or go anywhere that I haven't already been and owned by laughing at myself first.

And if you're super nervous about someone saying something and aren't yet ready for things just say you're getting it as a gift for someone else if asked or so and so told you to pick it up for them. Even better you can use this to your advantage ask if something would be a good gift? Then check out.
It's not a bad thing to do and on top of it you'll get a opinion of clothing if you want :) two in one score.
And most likely at that point they'll be thinking it's not for you and what you've done to the mind is make someone focus on another reason and the object of clothing and NOT you. :)

Thank you all, just the boost I needed.

I ended up going to Target on my way home, it was super busy with all the urbanites.

I took my time and got what I thought would be good, considering I've never done my own makeup.

One gal was browsing in the same section as me and she just glanced at me a gave a little smile.

The only weird vibe I got was at the checkout; the teller was kind of haughty, like 'why are you being so timid?'. :P

The closest experience I have had to it was the first time I bought condoms.

All in all, a positive event, though makeup is expensive.  I knew that, but holy crap.

Now I just have to learn how to put it on.

Hi there Veda,
Glad to hear that it was a reasonably good experience all in all!  I hope you chose well , theres so many choices in tone and colours, There are some great trans specific make up videos on Utube!  Once you know what kind of foundation tone and the blush and lipstick and eye colours that work best with you , then buying make bc a lot easier!
If you plan on using your own hair, maybe start looking at videos on styling your hair or on buying a good quality wig! I started " coming out" in the early 90s, seeing all the good visual information out there now in videos on the subjects, I so wish I had that back then!
Practice makes perfect so dont be afraid to try different things until you find a look you feel comfortable with, Ive got my make up down to 5mins and swooosh! out the door lol
Blessings! [emoji177]Julie

I love buying makeup, and am starting to get a little addicted  :P

If/when you decide to visit a store the primarily sells cosmetics (Sephora, Ulta, etc), you'll find that the girls (and a boy or two) are super helpful and love showing you what they've found to work for them.  Also, the prettiest ones will tell you about how long it took for them to learn how to use makeup the right way, which skin care products to use, etc...

On that note, do make sure you start to incorporate the right skin care regimen as you begin exploring the world of cosmetics.  It not only keeps your skin as clean and clear as possible after putting on makeup, but will actually make your foundation, shadows, etc look smoother and more even, giving a higher feminine look.  And when I say regimen, I just mean finding products for your skin type, regardless of the brand.  I tend to mix brands, because it's the specifics that matter more.

Feel free to message me whenever if you wanna ask any questions as you get started.  It took me a while, and I still have a lot to learn, but I LOVE helping others find their way into it  ;D

I want to go with subtle, yet elegant.  I tried to get some basic earth-tones that complement my complexion: beige foundation, black/brown mascara, 'shimmering sands' eye shadow, 'midnight brown' eyeliner and 'natural blush' lip color.  I didn't buy blush as I wasn't sure what my color for that is.

I can totally see that with myself, I bought a little pouch for everything (I even brought it to work with me!) and I can easily imagine having a number of little sets, one for going out, one for work, one for fun, another for fun, and another for fun... :)

As soon as I get a chance to try it I'll post in the 'Beauty' forum.

Funny note: I tried out my foundation and lip color last night.  When I woke up this morning I went to brush my teeth and there were some smudges on my toothbrush, sleepily I looked at it wondering 'What the heck is that?'  Then I realized I had brushed my teeth the night before while I still had my lip color on.  :D
