I'm quickly approaching my gender confirmation surgery.  My surgeon doesn't have an opinion about hair removal on the surgical site but I've read enough to know that I want to have at least some of it done.  My Electrologist is willing to do it but I need to show her where it needs to be done.  My surgeon will be using the standard penile inversion method.  Does anyone have a diagram showing the areas that need to be cleared?  Thanks.

Welcome to Susan's Place. One of the advantages of PI is that you don't normally need hair removal. The only time it might be an issue is if you have hair on the penis. Hair removal is an issue if the scrotum tissue is used to construct a vagina. As long as it remains outside, the hair isn't normal and issue and if it is, it can be removed latter. My surgery was PI and only the penis was used to construct the vagina.

We issue to all new members the following links so you will best be able to use the web site.

I had electrolysis on my penile shaft and scrotum and a 1 inch border around these 2 areas that extended down the perineum to within 1 inch of my anus. I do not have the diagram. Think of a circle with a stem on one side.

Only some girls end up with vaginal hair post-op. It really depends the color and thickness of your pubic hair.

Some surgeons scrape the scrotal skin and penile shaft and use cautery to remove the follicles during the procedure. Others require electro and also have requirements about how long before the surgery that all the hair must be gone. I can't imagine how a surgeon could have no opinion on the topic, if you don't mind me asking, who is doing your procedure?

Dena, I looked only at PI surgeons, and Brassard was one of the few I saw who did *not* require hair removal - that was a selling point for me. It's definitely not safe to assume that PI generally means no hair removal, at least not yet. This may be because very few surgeons do "pure" PI anymore, of course; I have a small amount of perineal skin and scrotal skin used as grafts in the vagina, and it seems as though more surgeons are tending toward such a "hybrid" technique.

In addition, Brassard recommended finishing any electro (if the patient did it anyway, despite his opinion) at least a year before GRS, because otherwise the hair follicles would be weakened and harder to remove.

I've also never heard of a surgeon with no opinion, but the problem is that the diagram varies by surgeon's technique. Only the surgeon really knows which bits of skin should be hairless, and if the surgeon won't say...

This is about hair in the vagina following SRS with Brassard, who says you don't need electrolysis.

Suporn says the same thing, and I read a post by someone who had hair afterwards, but it was only at the entrance and easily removed.

I've read a number of times that you shouldn't have electrolysis close to your surgery date as it can damage the skin, which is bad for some reason.

If your surgeon can't answer the question, then I'd worry a bit about that and prefer to have hair removed anyway, except for the date thing.

In fairness, the poster in that thread had her surgery over a decade ago, and we don't know how many hairs there actually were, and I would bet that the techniques involved have evolved pretty well since then, as have most SRS-related techniques.

I had my surgery with Brassard two years ago, and I was very hairy even half-way up my 'penile' shaft. Post-op, I had about 18 hairs growing deep inside my vagina, I was in a panic, and grossed out, but Brassard was calm and told me to wet my thumb and first finger of my left hand (I am right-handed), roll onto my right side, spread my legs, work my finger and thumb in as deeply as I can, and with my fingers inside myself, pinch the hair as close to the skin as possible, and slowly tear them out, pull as many as you can, and keep doing this, over time, they will stop growing, and your vagina will be hair-free. A year later, after no more than 12-15 pull sessions, I am down to two hairs. Gross, but worth the effort, plus, I became more familiar with my vaginal canal, found my G-spot. Yeah, it was not something I liked, but I did it, and now my self-esteem is much better. It was a non-issue, ultimately, and though it was distressing, it was a FAR less painful option than getting zapped on my 'boy' junk pre-op, oh my gawd, yesss...

And no guy ever noticed the hair before I did, lol.

This subject has been discussed so many times. I will give it one last detailed explaination.

Laser and electrolysis hair removal takes years to be rid of hair. Each time the hair follicle becomes smaller and the hairs finer. To the point that it requires magnifying glass to see them and its easily to miss when very fine hairs. On your facial hairs when they become so fine they become vassilar hair, they are virtually invisible, CIS women have them. However, these fine hairs are NOT acceptable inside your vagina.

During surgery, scrotal and penile skin hair follicle scraping is done by one or two technicians, it is very labor intensive. They use high magnification glass to see these follicles, in Thailand they have a propriety procedure. It is the only method to ensure there is no hair, as this skin will be used to construct your vagina. Laser and electrolysis make some hair so fine that the technicians may miss it. Therefore modern procedures ask that you do not do laser on the scrotal and penile skin to be used for the vagina.

You can do laser or electrolysis in the areas that will not be scraped. I suggest you look at different stitch scars that srs leaves on the internet. You can do electrolysis or laser in these area. But you can do this post srs.

Presently I am doing laser at the lower entry point outside the scrapped area. Its no more difficult than doing it before surgery.
When we first start our journey the perception and moral values all dramatically change in wonderment. As we evolve further it all becomes normal again but the journey has changed us forever.

I had 6 electrolysis sessions each a month apart ending 6 months prior to GCS. As stated before, 1" around the penis and scrotum and the penis and scrotum. They also do hair removal scrapping during the operation. I had a scrotum graph and my penile skin ( 3/4 of an inch) was discarded. I am 10 weeks post-op and I do not see any hair :) I went to Dr. McGinn.
