My skin is not the darkest shade but it is the shade just lighter than it, I would say IV bordering on V on the Fitzpatrick scale. I am of Indian descent if that matters.

What are my options for facial hair removal? Am I pretty much screwed and is electrolysis my only option?

You can contact professional dermatologist to avoid the risk factors of hair removing treatment.

Some of the newer lasers target a wider range of skin colors and can use techniques like lower power settings spread over more sessions to remove hair, but the effectiveness is going to vary person to person based on how dark your skin is, how fine your hair is, and how deep the follicle is rooted. I would look into some free consultations at different facilities. Aestheticians should be able to give you some first hand info on the specific lasers they use and which might work best for you.

A decade ago, I went to my dermatologist and asked for help with facial hair removal.  The response I got was getting laughed at, and then he said "that's not dermatology, it's cosmetic".  So my first recommendation is make sure you explain that you're trans to any doctor or professional you encounter for facial hair removal.

If you want permanent results with maximum efficacy, definitely do electrolysis.  If your hair is especially stubborn, you should start HRT first to get your hair to change to a more cooperative state before getting the electrolysis.

YAG lasers and Diode lasers are the best types for dark skin. Also electrolysis.

Dark skinned persons usually have very dense hair so you can expect it to be a quite sensitive and/or painful experience.

Most laser hair removal places have a YAG or Diode laser.

avoid IPL lasers. they are a scam and do not effectively remove or reduce hair.
