Having lived most of my life as a male I've pretty much neglected my skin, and never really learned how to take care of it. Same for my lips, I have a nervous habit of peeling dead skin off of my chapped lips. (I always avoided using petroleum products on my lips because someone told me they were bad for you - the more you used them, the more you needed to keep using them, like an addiction).

As a result, my facial texture is not terrible, but it's kind of rough, with big pores, oil spots, the occasional acne scar and so on. Again, none of this mattered to me when I was presenting myself as male - males are supposed to look 'craggy' (how else would someone like Robert Mitchum be considered a sex symbol?)

Now that I'm trying to present as female, I find that my ignorance of these matters is daunting - I hardly know where to start. Yes, there is a lot of information online, but 99% of that is people trying to sell you something that you possibly don't need. Go to any high-end hair salon and one of the things you'll quickly notice is that they get a commission for pushing "product".

So I would be interested in advice on starting a regimen of care for both my face and my lips. I figure the folks here aren't going to be biased or have an agenda. I only request that the daily routine not be too onerous, I'm not sure I want to add a lot of extra overhead.

Hi Tasha,

I had this question also for the same reasons. When I came out to my oncologist one of the things I asked her was what she would recommend for facial moisturizing. She replied she uses Roc products. I got their aging night cream and facial moisturizer and am trying it. The aging line is supposed to be helpful with fine lines of aging. I don't know if it is helping (I've only been using it about 2 weeks) with those but it is what I decided to try. Roc product are fairly high cost but I got them for about half the going price by ordering  form Target.

  Hopeful,

My suggestion would be stop washing your face with soap and instead use a good moisturizing cleanser.  If you google "facial moisturizing cleanser" a bunch will come up but I have used Albolene for years.  I use it everyday even if I'm not wearing makeup.  Oh...  btw it is a great makeup remover!

Good luck.

If you  are Pre HRT use men's cleanser and moisturiser, they are better designed for your skin and a great way to start.

Use a non soap cleanser as suggested, after rinsing this off apply a moisturiser...you need to get into a routine which is the hardest thing to do. takes about three weeks to do. None of this stuff is any good until you do it regularly

Do this twice a day ensuring the moisturiser has sunblock 30+...once you have established this simple routine you can then start looking at different types of creams and lotions that do all sorts of things. For me the simpler the better. I use Natio products as I find them good value for money in women's brands. In Men's I use Nivea...quite often the women's product and men's contain exact same ingredients and the men's stuff is far cheaper.

You will also want to exfoliate a couple of times a week to remove all the dead skin cells etc. A good quality vitamin a cream can help with skin tone ...hope that is enough to get you started

I suppose it's the case of finding what works for you.  I still wash with soap and use a generic moisturizer with sunscreen in it right out of the shower/after shaving.  I exfoliate twice a week.  My skin is fine and soft.  For body I wash with soap and an exfoliating cloth.  Once again I use a generic moisturizer right out of the shower.   Once a week I use a scrub made from coconut oil and salt to exfoliate.  I have tried a couple of expensive moisturizers, but the difference was marginal compared to the cost.  Your mileage may vary, as always.  For lips I just use chapstick as needed through the day.  At night I slather a little Vaseline over them.  Simple and works for me.  I was blessed with nice skin so my routine is pretty simple.  I'm sure others have better advice if your skin quality is lacking.  Best thing is definitely exfoliate and moisturize regularly.
