Im not sure if this is quite the right category (i suggest a surgery sub-forum!) but I am scheduled for hair transplants next week to fill in the corners of my head and i had some questions.

My pre op notes say it can be between a 4-6 hour procedure and that lunch will be provided during the procedure.

Say what??

Can anyone tell me their experience getting transplants as far as what you did throughout the procedure itself?

Super excited though, my hairline has been the biggest thing holding me back :)

That sounds about right.

It's an outpatient procedure.  Mine was done with minimum medication -- valium and local anesthetic.  (A light lunch was served a little over halfway in -- an apple, a protein bar, some juice.  Also got a couple of bathroom breaks.)  During the procedure itself, first I was laying face-down on something like a massage table, with a cushioned face rest, while they removed a strip of hair from the back of my head and sewed it up; I slept through most of this.  The rest of the time was spent on my back, while they put the extracted hairs into their new location. Trance-y music played in the background the whole time.  It was very relaxing, actually!
What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it.

Mine was very much the same as above.  It was absolutely fascinating to watch them fiddle around with the removed hair strip, freeing up each individual hair follicles in a tray of water until they looked like little tadpoles floating around in there.  We got a lunch choice from the deli downstairs, which was pretty decent (the office was in Century City), and the thing took all day, maybe 9 hours, as they harvested about 3000 hairs and filled in my hairline further than I had expected.  They just had movies of my choice running on a big screen all during the procedure, so it was a totally chill day.

My hair looks pretty much like the 5 month photos we've looked at, and I'm only 4 months in now, so it bodes really well for me.  I would highly recommend my doctor (Dr. Mark Dauer) if you're in the Los Angeles area.  He's very sweet and totally cool, and the staff is fun and attentive.

lol yep that's right. You're awake during it. You're sitting up for most of it etc.

I assume you're doing FUT? If that's the case, they lay you on your stomach first and take the strip of hair out of the back and sew it up good. then the rest of the timeyou're sitting up while they do all the work. You're of course numb and a bit drugged up but the rest is just local anesthetic.

My doc had suggested I bring movies or they had some and I had the tv on for the time but a lot of the time I actually was talking and getting to know the nurses and doc as they got to know me too. Was kind of fun actually.

Megan.

I did FUE a year ago. Local anesthetics to the to head,  then just lie back and relax.  They took from the back and sides,  then after lunch popped them back in the top (crown)  for me. It goes surprisingly quickly.

Don't remember a thing...he gave me a glass of "jungle Juice" a lovely warm blanket and chair...just as I was about to nod off two nurses walked me into theatre and got me comfortable in a chair...next thing I remember is having something to eat...it was the same on both occasions...never felt a thing.

Hiya Kit,

Please see above.  I have worked with Dr. Mark Dauer in Century City and had a wonderful experience overall.  With no hesitation I recommend him.

thank you for the replies!

I am glad to hear the experiences are pretty consistent. I am always nervous going into procedures even as small as it is this time. i just want to get it over with and start growing already! Cant wait for 2 years...... sigh lol
