Please tell me I am not the only one who has had problems with their name.

FinallyMichelle

So my name is changed, that's why Finally Michelle. :) I thought that I was done with everything but my DD 214. This week I got my bank card done and my car insurance. Glad that I never have to hear, "So we are doing a marriage name change right?" again. Or some version of that. My insurance asked me if they insure my husband, if so there may be options for smaller premiums.

I am done and feeling good about it. Picked up my last letter for surgery today, and I am walking on air. Right across the street from my VA therapists office is one of those giant wholesale membership stores that I am a member of. I decided to stop in just to get quinoa salad, it is so good.

As I show my card to go in I think that I should get my card fixed but, well the line at the service counter is huge. I can make it, just one item right?

Oh my lord! I thought the cashier was going to come across the register at me. Is Mike here? Yeah, that's me. Really he has to be here. Fish through my bag for my court paper. I am sorry, you can't just use anyone's card, we need to make sure the member is purchasing. Show her my paper. She looks and says, Yes Michael needs to be here. I am sorry, could you leave the line please so I can help the MEMBER behind you. No I AM Mike, I will not leave the line. I have waited 5 minutes and I will not wait another 5 minutes. By this time she is mad. The manager comes running over. Can I help? Yes, she is not the member, the member is not here and she won't leave. So I hand the manager the court document. She looks at my card and the document looks back up and says, Yes if Michael is here you can make your purchases. So I bend over so I can look one in the eyes then the other. Please listen to me. You really are not getting it. I USED to be Mike the member, I am NOW Michelle the member.

By that time maybe 15 people around us are just watching the drama. The people in my line and the lines on either side of us. Oh! I am sorry. Yes, let me override this so you can finish here and then I will help you update the name on your membership and get you a new card. I am so sorry about the mix up.

I should have changed it first, I know. I could have handled it better. I get so flustered. I don't know what to say in a situation like that. You would think that as many times as I have been involved in that situation I would be good at it by now.

Well, hopefully that is the last.

Please though, has anyone else experienced the repeated, exasperating and embarrassing name issues like that?

I have not used my dead name in over 25 years.. I can only imagine the trouble I'd have if I tried to 'prove' I used to be that person.  Thank goodness it has never come up.  Sounds like it was pretty embarrassing (to me it would be at least).., hopefully that will be one of the few times that will come up.

Thanks Devlyn. :) I was just mortified. And it kept escalating!

That's what I was hoping for Angelique. I have had problems there before when there were a lot less people and the cashier understood as soon as I showed my old ID. This time she scanned my card looked up and made my day as bad as a bad hair day.

Completely embarrassing Doreen. I hope that I am done. As soon as I got home I went through my wallet and my firebox to make sure there was nothing else that I needed to change my name on. I think that it is over, or at least I hope and pray that it is.
