Skin tones/colours

Right I need to buy some foundation & concealer no problems there I can just pop in a shop & hey presto, the problem I have is which skin tone/colour do I go for, in other words how do I get the right colour for me I don't really fancy asking the assistant for help (excuse me miss do I have a Ivory or mushroom face tone) you get my drift anyone got any tips to get it right please.

I sat down and had a makeup consultation at sephora and they used a pantone color meter on my face. Any of the nice makeup counters would not ne sirprised at all if you asked. Trans or cis, they see all kinds of people. Using a picture, or even just your eyes won't be as accurate since lighting can make such a difference

Well, what I did was ask the assistant!  Or rather my friend did.  I was makeup shopping in boy mode, with an out trans woman friend along for moral support.  My friend just said to the assistant, "Excuse me, miss, my friend here needs the works."  The sales lady then selected colours for me that matched my skin tones. 

Apparently, the best place to check your skin colour for matching a foundation is the inside of the lower arm.  It seems to work pretty well on my face.  I'm not sure how she came up with lipstick and blush colours, but the combination works, so she must have known what she was doing.

I'm actually planning to go for a consultation soon.  So I'll get another opinion, and maybe a better product line.  But I've been happy with the first person's colour choices.

I wound up going to a costume shop up the street from my office. They're used to dealing with actors and people who want to dress up for whatever reason. I didn't say why I needed it, but they were very helpful.

I would actually recommend working with an associate.  I found my foundation (and primer) by going into an Ulta and just asking for help.  I was presenting completely male and yet they were super friendly and helpful.  The Lancome consultant I worked with there found the exact right shade, applied it to ensure it was the right color and gave me tips on how to use the products going forward.  Go into any good cosmetics store or a cosmetics counter at a quality department store and you should have similar luck.

I just used the colour match service at my local boots chemist. Be aware that your skin changes colour depending on how tanned you get in the summer so you may need to get colour matched a few times a year.

I went into Shoppers Drug mart here in Canada and went to the cosmetic section. I talked to a sales woman and explained that I was starting my transition and I needed some help with what I need in makeup. I was quite surprised when she spent about a hour with me find what I needed and what shades looked best on me. They were extremely helpful, because of that I get all my cosmetics from them.

 That's what I need laurie a good make over but where I live there's only two shops that would do it the one is were I buy mine from ( normally say its for the wife) & the other is were I used to buy my black nail varnish ( nearly 30s a goth) so they both know me but I suppose if I did it would make their days lol

  So they already know you albeit with a cover story but they know you there...

Don't let the coercion force find out that tidbit. They be nagging the heck out of you to get it done.

If you can get to a boots store,  they have their 'match made'  service, they scan your jawline with little gizmo,  and it says which No.7 foundation colour is the closet match. It takes about 30 seconds,  and the girls in boots never seem to bat an eyelid 😀. The boots website lists which stores offer this service,  just go in and ask at the No. 7 counter.

Hi Cold Heart;
I use Bare Minerals Liquid Foundation - It is the best and put on with a brush with just two drops giving all over coverage for the whole day. I just went to the Bare Minerals counter in Selfridges in Oxford Street in London and they did the skin tone match and provided with two liquid foundations (one for winter and one for summer). The winter one gives me a sightly warmer tone for my skin.
