Hey, I didn't know where else to ask but, why is Premarin oestrogen discontinued? Only have 2 weeks supply, and what's the best alternative or the new oestrogen in tablet form available?? I've asked all my local pharmacies and they don't have any in supply and there's a manufacture problem, so I'm guessing it's stopped it's production. I've been using Premarin since September 2016, and now it's going to feel strange changing the oestrogen tablets.

I currently live in UK, London.

Many thanks xx

Venus, Premarin was or may be discontinued due to the dangers associated with it as it is essentially horse oestrogen. You are far better of with bio-identical oestrogen, your medic can prescribe this.

I was on Premarin for years and now I am on estradiol. When I compare the two, Premarin was several times more expensive and I seem to be getting far better results off Estradiol. Estradiol wasn't available when I stared HRT but I believe that it's far better than Premarin and my doctor should have switched me when it first came out.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, I'll ask my doctor about estrodiol! I'll probably continue on Androcur, thanks :)

Premarin being a natural product derived from Pregnant Mares Urine, has had a few shortages in the past because the demand is much greater than the supply. Estradiol is a synthetic bio-identical and is much cheaper and safer than Premarin.

I believe the only reason Premarin is still used is because there's a billion dollar industry behind it, and money speaks. Pretty unethical in my mind.

I would not touch the stuff!

It is animal cruelty in everyway, do not use it.
It's big sacks of piss hanging of the arse ends of poor mares in foal.
And I really doubt once they have the goal they are free.

Also we are people not horses, horse estrogen?
I hope that if you are having trouble getting it, it means it is coming to an end for them

Premarin was first marketed in the 1940's and for it's time was state of the art in drug therapy. Back then, there was not any other similar drugs available. Today, we have many other choices.

The correct term is a urinary catheter and collection bag.
The mare's urine is collected in a sterile method and processed to extract the estrogens.

The extracted chemicals are still active in humans. Both horses and humans are mammals.

I agree. Premarin has outlived it's usefulness.

Yes , it's really sad :( and plus I've become Vegan recently. I'll speak to my endocrinologist tomorrow for a consultation and switch to an alternative one. I dont like animal cruelty, it's really not my fault my doctor gave me this :/ but Now is a good reason to switch away from this. I hope they stop animal cruelty all together, it's one reason why I decided to be vegan. Thanks  for help :)

I was also on premarin for decades, until my insurance would no longer pay for it. As soon as I was switched to estradiol, my breasts and hips expanded. I wish I had switched long before my insurance quit paying for it.
