Sorry but didn't know how to title this. My question is; if I started on hrt in a country lets say Colombia and moved to Europe, will my prescriptions be valid in a way that I don't have to start the whole transitioning process again just because I transitioned outside of Europe or the USA?

Most of the time you can bring your filled prescription to another country but check in advance because drugs that may be legal in one country may be illegal in another. As for  a new purchase, some countries don't require prescriptions for many medications and they can be purchased over the counter. For drugs that require a prescription, you will most likely need to get a local doctor to write one for you.

In Florida we have many vacationers visit here from other countries. Pharmacies in Florida can fill prescriptions for visitors from any country as long as the prescription would be valid in their home nation.

Now, just because they are allowed by state law does not mean that a particular pharmacy will honor an out of country prescription.

I am a licenced Pharmacist in Florida.

Every locality has their own regulations. Just ask a local Pharmacist in the area you plan on moving to.

Hi Jessica!

From my experience... For non-controlled substances, such as HRT, most pharmacies on the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) will be relatively lenient and probably sell you the product, although they don't have a truly reliable way of confirming the authenticity of your prescription. On the other hand, with a foreign prescription, your medication will not be subsidized and you'll have to pay the full price (sometimes there's a huge difference). In Western Europe (at least France and Belgium) and Northern Europe (at least Sweden), it's not so easy... they will most probably require that you visit a local doctor and get a new prescription.

Hope this helps!

Hugs, Sarah

Thank you all for the answers to my question, very helpful. I will contact a transgender organization in that country and ask them how it works.
