Slow vs Fast Transitioning - FtM version

Welp, there's a version of this in the MtF part of the forum, so I thought we men should have a version as well! [emoji4]

I think my transitioning could be somewhat fast.  Four years ago this spring, I found out that what I am feeling about being born the wrong gender had a name. After thinking and talking to my boyfriend about the pros and cons of transitioning, a year ago September, I found a therapist.  November 14, I had the court date to have my name legally changed.  December 2nd I started T.

This spring, after posting multiple trans-related articles on facebook, some of my family asked me if I was trans, so I suppose that was my unofficial coming out.  A conference call phone conversation May 12 had my younger sister figure out I am transitioning, and she outed me to my little brother during that call. 

Now I'm debating on writing a letter that I will hopefully be able to read in person to each of my (divorced) parents to explain that I'm transitioning and why.

Now that I'm looking back on my journey so far, it HAS been a fast transition!

So everyone, do you consider your transition slow or fast?

I'm very fortunate to consider my transition a fast one, and much of my childhood had been too numb and confused to realize what was wrong so I only experienced revelational dysphoria through the latter half of my teens around 19-21. I was lucky that I was already quite masculine so hormonal transition didn't take long as well.

When I hit 20 I said I finally couldn't take it I had to move out and find a way to do things to help myself , for what I saw I was trapped two years too late when I could've legally left.

Well...I did. and I was worried the entire time the process would be too hard, that hormones would not be accessible (the big thing was wait lists, I heard stories like that and I swore I'd never get on)



Anyways, I left January 2016, began presenting more male,  got on hormones in May, three months later I started passing real well and ended up changing workplace where people called me by my name and how I looked,  and then I eventually "came out" which I didn't expect to go well anyways. 2016 was a hell of a year for me, I did a 180 and I'm excited I get to spend the rest of my college and career life this way

Mine was fast.

I decided (after deliberating for about 8 years) to transition at the end of summer 2014. I started therapy in September 2014 and came out in person and online throughout the fall.

Started HRT December 2014.

Had top surgery and corrected all of my legal documents in April 2015.

Started having consultations for bottom surgery in winter 2015.

Got all of my referrals for bottom surgery (1 from my doctor, 2 from mental health providers) by January 2016.

Had a hysto in February 2016.

Had bottom surgery in March 2017. I'm open to going back for phallo in the future, but it's not a goal currently so I would say I'm done.

In total it would be just under 3 years from making the decision to transition to being completely done with it.

Somewhere in the middle I guess.

I decided to go ahead back in January 2015, waited 10 months after GP referral for GIC assessment, had a few sessions with a psychiatrist and a supervising doctor and got HRT October 2016. I'm not sure the referral date yet for the next surgery. NHS gets more admissions by the day and isn't getting any more money to deal with it so who knows at what point it will be finished off.

Those joining the NHS for treatment now will probably be waiting 2-3 years to get to where I'm at. It's pretty slow.

Fast ish I suppose; as going private would usually be quicker but ofc can't complain

-came out at home April 2015

-changed my name June 2015 and came out at work

-can't remember when I had my first therapy appointment but had a few just after I changed my name and got my T prescription in November.

-April 2016 referred to an NHS GIC

-April 2017 finally got my first appointment. Decided to go ahead for paying for surgery privately.

-Had my top surgery consultation in June of 2017

I would love to transition more quickly... but I can't afford to. I finally accepted to myself that I was trans in early 2015. I started to come out to my husband later that year but things didn't really come to a head until mid 2016 when I kept bringing it up and he threatened suicide if I kept talking about it. I got in to see a trans friendly GP in November 2016 and by December 2016 I had a referral to all of the local gender psychiatrists... and I've been on the waiting lists ever since. Best case scenario is that I'll get in to see one of them before the end of 2017. That appointment will start the beginning of my official transition.  One year after that, if I jump through all the hoops, a referral for top surgery can be forwarded to the provincial selection committee.  If I get approved for surgery, I will then have a 1-2 year wait for a surgery date... So best case scenario, I can have top surgery paid for by the province in late 2019 or early 2020...
The other option is to save a lot of money and pay out of pocket for surgery outside of Alberta... which would probably take longer than the waiting lists...

I'd say I'm pretty slow. Started almost 3 and a half years ago and I'll be getting top surgery done in October. Planning a hysto after that but not for a while after haha. I'm just lucky cause I started when I was freshly 20 years old so my body took to it a little easier.

First knew/had the words for this - spring 1999
Partial social transition - graduate school, 2003-2005
Detransition to come home to Southern Baptist family - August 2005
Started seriously considering transitioning - April 2016
Social transition (clothes/haircut) - late October 2016
Hormones - February 2017
Started going by James in public - April 12, 2017
Legal name change - June 1, 2017 (happy pride month)
Therapy - August 2017
Consistent care - still working on that, but maybe soon

I'm hoping for top surgery next year, if I can get my finances in good shape. I have an assload of debt.

Mine has felt long to me. I came out in 2010 but had to wait (since I was underage) through the 3 longest years of my life before starting T in 2013. Also changed my name during this year. Got top surgery in 2014 and haven't done anything since. Insufficient funds are currently holding me up at the moment.
