What's wrong with Ohio?

And what can be done about it?

Ohio's laws are totally unjust and anti-trans. They do not change the gender on your birth certificate, even after you get SRS. That's not all. I wrote to a university in Ohio which I once graduated from and requested a name and gender change in my student records. They wrote back and said I can get a diploma issued in my new name if I send in the old diploma plus $25. But by Ohio law they're not allowed to change my gender.

How and when did Ohio make such a discriminatory law? And how will it ever be changed? What can we do about it? I'm so sorry I had the misfortune to be born in that transphobic state.

The Ohio Birth Certificate Project was planning legal action in the courts to change the anti-trans law. I signed up for their mailing list, but there has been no news lately. Is it stalled? Is it going to happen?

If it would help, I would write to every single Ohio state senator and representative to repeal whatever stupid law discriminates against us like this. Governor Strickland this year issued a ban on gender identity discrimination for state employees, which gives me a glimmer of hope that Ohio may not be eternally benighted.

How will we ever get the law changed?
Here's what I find about compromise--
don't do it if it hurts inside,
'cause either way you're screwed,
eventually you'll find
you may as well feel good;
you may as well have some pride

i also live in this god forsaken state of ohio. i think it is quite unfair of all the laws we have regarding this issue but if you live somewhere else in the states it is much easier to do all this. my wife and i both agree that this issue should be looked at because it is a really big issue if something were to hapen to you in this state like an accident or something where they had to go through your personal history files they would see all that. ohio is just oh so discreet about to. it's just bs.

I was born there also, I guess it is something we have to live with for now.  I don't see it changing anytime soon.

What if Martin Luther King had said that and just given up?
Unjust laws can be changed. We need activism now before Real ID goes into effect and really screws us. I want to know how to go about this.

i like the MLK thing, if he can change crappy laws for all people why the hell can't we? that real id thing is stupid and it isn't. i personally don't see myself travelling ever in my lifetime. the way i see it is if you are leaving the country you should need it or flying somewhere. all i see it doing is outing a lot of us especially in ohio and some other states where there are people who think what we do is a problem and want to make themselves look good at someone else's expense. for the record i hope it does change, everybody should only know everybody else's business if they want to tell it. privacy is a very big issue...

Me too. Columbus is supposed to be such a 'gay-friendly' city and yet the entire state is transphobic.

Just to add some humor and please don't take it as offensive because it isn't intended to be.

Maybe we could start by writing to the Ohio attorney general http://www.ag.state.oh.us/ about getting this law changed. Come on, we have to start somewhere.

If it helps any, the new AG is a Democrat.

Of course, if Ohio was Cali, then this wouldn't be a problem as the laws there are different.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
