Name change, what do I need to change?

Alright I have submitted my name change and waiting on the hearing date and all that jazz. I also know generally what I have to change for myself. The question I have is this, do I need to change my children's' birth certificates. I don't want any confusion to come when I say I am their blood and kin when I go to get school information. I don't want them to say "you aren't on their birth certificate, how are you related?" Can I get theirs' changed as well or do I need to do so? Any advice on this would be good.

Take your name change document to the school and get the records updated with it. Between the birth certificate and the court document they  should have enough information to get it right. Make sure you get two certified copies of the court order as you will need one to change your birth certificate and you may require another when changing documents like this. You may lose the one used to change your birth certificate but they should return the other after they look at it.

On other option is to get your new name listed as an authorized person to handle your children's affairs on the school records.

You shouldn't need to change your children's records unless you are changing the family name or their name.

I received 5 certified copies when I had my name changed. You never know what other things need to be changed, from birth certificate to social security card, drivers license, your school records, etc...

...The question I have is this, do I need to change my children's' birth certificates. ...

I took my name change court order to the Missouri Health Dept. to change my kids' BCs and was told they need an order specific to that and would not change them.  So, I had to go back to court and get a judge to issue another order to get them changed specifically, and I took that down and they accepted that for the changes of my name on my children's BCs.  Check with your state's vital record department to see what they require to change your kid's BCs first.  :)
Some people say I'm apathetic, but I don't care.
