I am a transgender woman who presents as male most of the time for right now, but hope to change that in the future. I am 39 and have been on a hormone regimen for nearly 10 years. I have also had laser hair removal on my face. The combination of genetics, hormones, and removed facial hair have increased the likelihood of people thinking I am way younger than I am. The other day while having my hair styled, the hair dresser asked if I had started college yet. I paused awkwardly for a moment and responded, "Um... I'm actually 39 years old.". The look on the person's face was priceless.
Does anyone else have this issue?
Having people think I am younger can be good at times, however professionally I can tell that some people are sort of closed off when first meeting me. Many times at my job I help advise people nearing Medicare age. I can see the person or people looking at me with skepticism at first, probably thinking "how can this 18-20 year old help me". On the positive side of things, it doesn't take too long for that initial hesitancy to leave their demeanor after speaking with me.
Any stories like mine out there?
