Hi.   I am considering low dosage HRT, and am 52.   I am also not ready to come out.    I really want to help my mood and some disphoria.    That said I don't want my body to change too much, at least not yet.

What is your experience or advice?
Karen

* felt different like I did not fit, with strong feminine feelings and gender questions my entire life
* Sept 2016 - January 2017 real began to seriously question and research gender
* August 2017 friend explains transgender and gender vs sexual orientation, and immediately felt shock and begin to believe I maybe transgender
* March 2018 after 3 therapists, accepts I am transgender and am transitioning
* July 18, 2018 began HRT
* Feb 4, 2019 began Estrogen

Karen:  I have no experience with a low dosage HRT regimen but I can tell you that starting HRT has affected my mood for sure.... much more emotional, crying, and for me I am not sure about "mellow"...

??? "low dosage" HRT??   Have you talked to your doctor about that?... and have you told your doctor what you want the low dosage of HRT to do for you?

Unless you only intend to remain on HRT for a short time like a month or two, it's difficult to determine what your results will be. A secondary consideration is some people intending to use low dose decide the benefits are so good, their plans change to full speed ahead. Think about what you will do if the changes turn out to be more than you expect.

Too little E (or T) usually amplifies emotions and makes one cry more often. High enough E (or T) makes one more mellow, calmer and more emotionally stable where nothing bothers them or at the very least, it takes a lot before one gets riled up.

On high E (injections do it for me), I just feel so calm. I believe some of us have been misled into thinking E = crying more often, mood swings, more emotional when really these are symptoms of too little E. My 2 cents after being 14 years on HRT.
I am not a medical doctor, nor a scientist - opinions expressed by me on the subject of HRT are merely based on my own review of some of the scientific literature over the last decade or so, on anecdotal evidence from women in various discussion forums that I have come across, and my personal experience

On HRT since early 2004
Post-op since late 2005

Hello Karen

I am in the same position as you and would advise you to explain to your doctor and/or gender therapist your reasons for considering low dose HRT.

Some members here have been on low dose HRT for a number of years but cannot as yet publicly transition due to family or career or other physical problems.

However if you are authorized by your doctor for HRT, it is customary for us all to start on low dose anyway.

In my case I started just 6 weeks ago but I already know for sure is right for me and expect to increase after the initial 3 months.

I wish you well on your journey whatever option you take.

Pamela
