I think for a lot of people our hair can get to be not the best looking at stages of its growing out.
I do trim it because although I doubt that trimming makes the hair grow any faster than about a half an inch a month, if you do take care of the split ends and frizzies, your hair may appear healthier and longer.

What one person might call "messy" for her though might also be fabulous looking on others.

The thing about keeping hair trimmed while growing it out isn't that it makes it grow faster...  Trimming split ends prevents them from splitting up the hair further and then breaking the hair shorter.  I had mine at about half way down my back in college and at the time wasn't bothered to keep it trimmed or healthy.  To me it seemed it stopped growing at that point because for every .5 in. of growth I would lose as much to breakage.

Good rule of thumb is it will grow on average .5 in. / month.  So let it grow for three and then have .5 trimmed.  Total growth would be roughly 4 in. / year and it will keep growing till you feel like Ripette Van Winkel!  :)

The other thing is you really don't need to worry about trimming at all until it gets to top of your shoulders.

I haven't had mine cut for 1 year now this month still remember I decided to transition about 2 days after and wished I hadn't cut it and had a few inches head start. Long hair is a pain and I'm not used to it touching me and falling in front of my eyes and face. I almost had it cut but saner mind prevailed and I know I won't regret that its just when you need everything to pull off looking somewhat fem the long hair goes a LONG way as far as people calling you she. That or hormones can't exactly do controlled tests. IF I get it cut now I will look like a lesbian sort of. My hair is wavy and thick, and I'm surprised how blonde it is, seemed darker.
