Yes, Faith — it is my experience that even in communities where people all seem to tell very similar stories about what being trans means to them, when you dig deeper you see a lot of variation, with people who don't fit the norm for the particular group often just not being as vocal as those who do.
But also sometimes the "standard" stories that really rub some of us the wrong way (and of course what's "standard" varies)... those stories often came into being because there are also people for whom they
do fit and for whom they
do explain what's going on and for whom they
do provide validation.
My conclusion from all of this is simply to marvel at the amazing variety of the human experience and be thankful I get to live in a time and place where I can tweak the knobs in ways that make my life better. A lot better.
