Hey guys,

So I've been on T for almost a year and a half now, and I've been kind of worried about my facial hair. I still really don't have much, and it hasn't progressed at all in months. I'm on gel T, and I've gotten all of the other changes, so it's definitely been effective otherwise. My T levels are normal, but not on the higher end.

It's just kind of surprising since all of the men in my family had full beards early on, and body hair wise I'm very hairy. I know facial hair can take a long time and I have to be patient, but since it hasn't changed much at all in at least 6 months, I'm just kind of worried it's never going to happen. Seeing so many other guys at this time on T with so much more facial hair doesn't help, either. All I have is neck hair, and a few strands on my chin/cheeks. My mustache hasn't changed since I started T, it's just peach fuzz.

What do you guys think? Should I give it some more time, or maybe talk to my doctor about switching to injections instead? I've heard gel doesn't work super well for a lot of guys, maybe it's not enough for me to get a beard. I would post a picture but I'm not sure how to insert a photo without using a URL.

Beards are rough.  I didn't even shave when I went into the Marines and probably shaved 1 once a week when I got out 4 1/2 years later.

And......

I recently got to the point where I actually develop a 5 o'clock shadow and trying to get rid it all.

Seems the process of turning face vellus hairs terminal has something to do with the blood circulation in the face, because minoxidil works great on it. Maybe you have poor face circulation. I have poor circulation to the skin, that's why I'm so pale I guess, but 5% minox worked well for me on the beard, in about 1 month I had most of it in where before it was almost non existent.

Yeah, maybe that has something to do with it. I do have a lot of vellus hairs too covering my whole face. This is what one side looks like after not shaving a few weeks, btw. I may consider minoxidil in a few months, I have heard that it can sometimes cause breakouts, though.

It's normal for facial hair to not really start until 1.5 or 2 years.
My facial hair progress:
1.5 years- just a dusting under my chin:

2 years- started to creep up and had more color:

2.5 yrs- all along jaw and creeping up my chin:

3 years 4 months- just waiting for cheeks, mustache finally happening:

Looking back at puberty, I seem to remember my facial hair took a good couple of years to fill in after puberty started..
This is not medical advice. Always consult your doctor.

If it's any consolation, my brother was in his early 20s before he could grow a decent beard.

Beards can take up to 5-6 years on HRT to develop. I never used minoxidil and I don't plan on doing so due to reading some pretty bad reviews about it and I just don't want the stuff on my face. I have a beard journal where I track a lot of my progress but I've been very busy recently so I haven't had a chance to upload it but here's my progress 1.5y on HRT vs 3.5 vs now.

1.5y

3.5y Apologies for this one haha. I just had surgery in October

Now nearly 4 years on

Just waiting on my mustache to mature now. It's coming in slowly bu surely.

Keep growing. Don't quit and stay away from razors. Trim up that neck and keep it in check. I use Kalamazoo from LUSH every Monday and Friday. I would also look into purchasing a Boar bristle brush for increased blood flow.

Happy bearding!
I've found you, Beast!
