Hi,

Can any one shed light on what the standard for corrective Gender Correction/Revisional Surgery aftercare is? For a patient who has been dilating and douching for many years, following Gender Reassignment Surgery, what is the standard safe routine aftercare  for a Male to Female woman who needs corrective surgery on the vagina?

Would it be the right thing to not douche for 6 weeks and not dilate for the same period, whilst the corrective surgery heals? My understanding is that the neo vagina always needs to be douched, once a day because the neo vagina is not self lubricating and can develop bacteria overgrowth and this can be very dangerous and the vagina needs dilating.

I know that for the first Gender Reassignment Surgery douching and dilating must start very soon after GRS surgery, but would it be appropriate to have to wait 6 weeks to not douche and dilate whilst the secondary vaginaplasty surgery heals.

I am unsure about secondary after care surgery.

Advice welcome please.

Welcome to Susan's Place. I haven't douched in many years and haven't had any problems or odor. Douching  daily removes the good bacteria that you need to maintain a healthy vaginal culture. If you have sex, you might want to douche but I'm not sure it necessary.

If you have corrective surgery, you need to discuss after surgery care with your surgeon. Because there are different surgeries the type of surgery will determine the proper after surgery care.

Hi Dena,

Many thanks for your reply. Very much appreciated! I was not told to stop douching by my original surgeon. It looks like if I have been douching for many years without any need to. I have been meticulous using boiled/distilled water in my douching and keep very clean.

Many thanks again.
