I just called my PCP's office to reschedule an appointment, and she called me "sir" three times. I didn't correct her because I was in a hurry and wanted to get off the phone, but it was frustrating and discouraging. I didn't get the impression she was doing it deliberately; she was friendly and helpful the entire time. Still, I'm tired of this happening. My counselor tells me that my voice sounds female, but I still get misgendered on the phone. My husband tells me that my voice sounds higher sometimes and lower sometimes, like it goes up and down in pitch. This makes me so self conscious when I'm out in public, and there aren't any voice therapists anywhere in my state. Does anyone else deal with this? How do you handle it?

There are voice therapist who work by Skype and I am willing to help people on the site though I haven't received any professional training other than what I  learned from my therapist. One of the tips would be to give your feminine name and make sure you put all your effort into the first few sentences. The human brain gender the voice quickly and once it does, it will continue to carry that into the rest of the conversation. You can also post your voice sample in the voice section and we will evaluate it and tell you where the problem is.

In therapy, you do most of the work but the therapist has a trained ear and tells you where the problems are and how to correct them. Often a voice has a few issues that need to be corrected to sound feminine so a limited amount of therapy may be all that's required.

Thank you, Dena. I apologize for my incredibly tardy reply, but things have become hectic with my plans and preparations since I last posted. I actually found some inexpensive software and I've been working with that. Everyone, including my friends, my husband, and my counselor, have told me my voice sounds feminine now. I haven't been called "sir" in several months, so I guess the lessons are working. I feel a lot more comfortable with myself now.

Your voice sounds different on the phone, so you shouldn't use phonecalls as a guide. It's way harder to pass on the phone.
I'm currently working as a receptionist and get misgendered a lot, but I found out that if I talk in a "cute" or very feminine way (I'm talking about intonation, not even voice pitch) I don't get gendered male.

Aliyah, can you share the name of the software that you are using?

That's a good point. My husband frequently gets called "ma'am" on the phone, but he doesn't sound feminine in person. It used to bother him to the point he would worry about it, but it doesn't bother him anymore. My voice was pretty deep in person for a while, but everyone tells me it sounds feminine now. I also consciously try to use a feminine intonation when I speak, so maybe that helps.

It's called "Eva F." It's available on the Apple App Store. You pay per lesson, which I think makes it a lot more affordable. It's $5.00 per lesson. I think it's helped me.

Try "Eva F." It helped me a lot. It's $5.00 per lesson on the Apple App Store, and I think it's also available for Android. I haven't even finished all the lessons yet, and everyone tells me now that my voice is feminine.
