So I tried to donate plasma yesterday to make some money. I didn't really do my makeup except for lipstick and I was dressed nicely with 3"boots. Basically everyday lazy.
First time visit so I go to the counter to register. The girl takes my ID and goes behind the wall. A minute later a guy in a lab coat comes out and asks me if I'm a man or a woman in front of a group of people standing in line. WTF
I'm embarrassed but I assume has a medical reason, so I tell him that I am biologically male, but I don't identify as such.
He walks away.

A few minutes go by and they send me to an interview room.
When I get there I ask the girl why he asked. She couldn't give me an answer so she went and got the guy. I asked him why he asked me and he said it's because I look like a guy.
So I asked them why it matters and he said I have to match my id
I asked where it says I'm male on my id and he says basically because I still have a penis they can refuse my id that identifies me as female.
Come back when your id says male!!!

Most likely it"s because of a one size fits all rule that has been in existence for a while. Aids resulted in a rule that prevented LGB from donating blood products because of the higher risk in the population. They didn't ask if they were monogamous or not, only if you were LGB. They assumed if you were LGB that you regularly had multiple partners.

If you want to donate, demand to see the manager of the blood bank and explain that you don't engage in dangerous sexual practices and that you are under supervised treatment. The odds are once they understand this they will allow you to donate plasma as they have a serious need of it all year around.

I'm sorry that happened. People can be pretty jerks.

I've been meaning to check out plasma donation, but I take Finasteride, so I hear I can't donate...

Kitty!

That kind of stuff can be so disheartening sister!... I'm sorry your intent to do some good in the world was thrown back in your face by some ignorant people...

But... in the win column... You can put your new avatar pic!!! Looking gorgeous dear sister!!!

Hugs!!!

Thank you all for the advice and for  Ashley sweet comment.
I'm thinking that I'll see a lawyer soon. I think their policy my conflict with the law. Or it's just the horrible people that work there, if the reviews can be believed
Thanks and hugs

Well I think its pretty simple. If your id says female, and you id as female, you say "Female".   They have no business knowing whats between your pants.

If you are post op & everything says female, even more so... though it shouldn't ever disqualify just because you are pre op.

Doreen,
I think my mistake was in thinking that they were medical professionals.

I've gotten in the habit of ONLY telling people what they need to know to treat me.   I am positive some will be mad or rant at me for this, but... if I'm seeing an endodontist for a root canal, they have no business needing to know that I had corrective genital surgery.  They do, however, need to know I'm on Fosamax for osteopenia.  If I'm seeing someone for a MRI of my brain, I don't need to go into great detail about my hormonal health.  I'll generally list information in abbreviations... its up to them to ask me what those abbreviations stand for.

Most the folks in the plasma centers are trained in phlebotomy but that's about it.  They certain are supposed to abide by HIPAA regulations, but do they? doubtful.   Be careful who you share and to whom.   I'm not saying lie, I'm saying they don't need to know everything all the time.  Just my 2 cents worth.

Yeah, it was a learning experience all right.
Hopefully when I speak to the lawyer on Tuesday, I'll know if I have any recourse.
Hope you're having a wonderful day

I agree the guy is being an ass hat. I am sorry he said those things to you.

I have no Idea why having genitals that match identity has anything to do with a donation. Unless like Dena said it is from past practices that have not been updated or he is discriminating.

Every place I have ever worked at, if the rules were unethical I would find myself apologizing to the person, empathizing, and agreeing with them.  The way he treated you was rude, and completely uncalled for.  Even if there are such rules, he could of at the very least tried to be more accommodating.  What a jerk, I'm so tired of people like that.

I had a similar problem at the DMV in Mississippi when I lived there. My ID, birth certificate, and all had me as female, with my female name. Since my friend's sister told them I was a guy, they told me to change it back. One call to the ACLU fixed that, and the guy that told me to change back hid in his office with a scowl on his face.

You would figure blood is blood anyone willing to give it would be appreciated as it is in great demand and they run out all the time, I know if I needed blood I would not be picky like that like you could have saved a life and he could have just killed some one by refusing you I don't get it.

They won't accept blood from people on certain medications. I've heard them claim estrogen is one of those medications. They've also told me that I can't donate because I am anemic, even tho I am on iron supplements to combat that, and all my labwork comes back with good results.

It seems that they will tell you anything that they want.
I'm speaking with a lawyer tomorrow, so I'll let you all know what they think. I've had a lot of positive affirmation lately and that has helped make me feel better about myself.
So, I'm not quite the mess I was last week.
Thank you all for your concern and shared outrage.
Hugs

How stupid some of the medical professionals, albeit minimally trained, can be just blows my mind.
Estrogen  ::) They don't even realize that would automatically disqualify 51 percent of the population.

I have a ton of respect for most of the people who do these types of jobs, but some people are just willfully ignorant.

I think some of them had to have pretty sheltered lives, with very little time to see the world. This can tend to lead to a very focused mind. Unfortunately, that focus disabled their ability to see shades of gray. Depending on where you reside, it could be difficult to avoid medical professionals that have gross misconceptions about the LGBTI community.
