Hey everyone I'm new here, My name's Michael and I'm 22. I haven't started transitioning yet because I'm not out to my family and also because I still live with my very transphobic mother.
But I might move out this year

Hello Michael, welcome to Susan's!

Sounds like you have some goals - I think that's great, to own and plan your future.  I found it very helpful to be able to interact with people here with a wide range of experiences.

I'm sorry to hear your mother is apparently transphobic, but I have seen surprising results when people have the difficult conversation and come out to their family.  Cases where someone may seem very negative on a topic but is completely supportive for someone they care deeply about.  It's called unconditional love.

There are no absolute guarantees with the adventures of life but I wish you the best.  If you plan carefully and take charge you will do well.

I have to second what Kendra said.  I came out to my mother and while she totally doesn't understand and is confused by me wanting to transition, she also went out of her way several times to tell me she loves me no matter what. That whole unconditional love thing goes a LONG way.  There are also TONS of literature out there that can clear up some of the ignorance on this topic such as https://www.pflag.org/sites/default/files/Our%20Trans%20Loved%20Ones.pdf that explain what transgender really means.  So many people think that it is just poor parenting or some sort of mental sickness like depression.

Welcome Michael! I'm glad you have found Susan's.
Many of us have experienced the fear of telling others.  Dreading to be free only hurts your soul.  Kendra speaks the truth about unconditional love.  It is a powerful dynamic that true friends and a loving family have.  Sometimes it can be hard at first for them, but they have only have had a short time to process it compared to the years you have had.
Good luck!

"If you go out looking for friends, you are going to find they are very scarce.  If you go out to be a friend, you'll find them everywhere."
