Hi,
I'm 16 and I'm looking to get top surgery. The doctors I am looking at are Dr. Mosser and Dr. Davis. I have been struggling with dysphoria and i feel like this surgery is life or death at this point. Additionally, I struggle with an eating disorder and my chest is really triggering. I can't keep a healthy relationship with my body or food because of my chest. I've been going to gender therapy for almost a year and will be getting on T in a few weeks. I'm planning on getting surgery at the end of the year, but I only have about $2000 out of the $10000. Due to all my medical treatments, my parents really don't have any extra money to put out. I have Blue Shield of California PPO. Has anyone gotten surgery covered as a minor with this plan? Also, I have signed up for many grants, but I don't want to depend on those since they aren't garenteed and I need this surgery done. BTW I'll be 17 when I'm planning on getting it done.

Welcome to Susan's Place. I don't know if your policy covers transgender surgery because it all depends on how the policy is written. Read the policy and see if there are any exclusion. If the policy doesn't contain exclusions, you need to contact BCBS and as what standards need to be met for coverage. As your under age, it possible they may require three therapy letters or that you be 18 before they will provide coverage. Time spent researching your policy may provide you with surgery costing only the deductible.
