Maybe I'm petty... I wouldn't get them a gift if I wasn't attending IF I don't like them and don't care.

Now if I genuinely wanted to go and can't make it for whatever reason, then yes, sending a gift extends that sentiment.

Otherwise, it's a bit backhanded... "I don't like you, and I probably wouldn't attend if it was the last thing I could do. But here's a gift anyway" ...

I'm against the idea of sending them a gift, it might send the wrong idea of you wanting something to do with them, the baby is not at fault, but it's not your problem, I have a similar issue with almost all my uncles from my dad's side, if you can never see them again please do.

No actually they haven't. My uncle stopped giving me gifts when I was around 10 years old.

If the gift is only for the baby, it only sends the idea is that you're a loving, caring person.
The card can be specifically written to the child, sending the message that this is for the baby.
Then every year send a birithday card.
If you ever receive a note back from the child, you will know that your dads brother and his wife really were sorry.
Not that you should let those two back it your life, but that will be your cousin and you theirs, and that's worth the hope you planted with this first gift.
