How long until hrt is irreversible

Hello everyone!

I have been on HRT for the last week and a half, estradiol and cyproterone acetate. Turns out that instead of making me feel great I got reaaaaally depressed.
Plus, I am a bisexual and I enjoy using my original downstairs equipment, I was hoping that hrt wouldn´t affect it too much, so I could still be able to have intercourse. Turns out that my T levels dropped so fast that everything just went totally flaccid, and my testicles shrunk to almost oblivion.

I just decided that for the moment those are not the changes that I am looking for. Still feel like a trans person, looking forward for ffs and laser hair removal, but I am considering that I would rather keep my hormones the way they have always been.

Anyway, my question is: After stopping HRT, are my T levels gonna go back to what they were, or should I expect some irreversible changes on that department? Is 1 week and a half enough for permanent changes?

Hi Penelope 🙋‍♀️ Welcome to Susan's Place!  I'm Jessica.
After only the very short time you had taken the medications, I believe that you should gain your T levels back fairly quickly.
Have you talked to your doctor about adjusting your medications to a lower dose?

I see your new here, so I'll post some links that may help you get better acquainted with the site. Pay attention to the site rules they can be of great help and don't forget the link highlighted red.  It has answers to questions that are commonly asked.  Then join in on a topic you find interesting and learn and share.

Hi Jessica!

Thank you for the help ! I was wondering how to upload an avatar, now I know.

I am going to consult with my endocrino tomorrow, he told me to stop medication and run some tests. I am actually off HRT for the last week now. Just got my T levels tested today, after 1 week off ciproterone, they are still very low, as low as a cis woman actually.

I once did DIY HRT for over a year and then stopped. My T rebounded back to a pretty high level near the top of the normal range. After only a week I would expect that it will quickly return to normal.

Hi Penelope,

Sorry to hear you had a rough experience starting HRT.  I hope things get better for you!

Like Jessica and Deborah, I think it's very unlikely that you'd have any permanent changes after only a week and a half, but your endo can give the best opinion on that if you haven't already asked.

Being trans isn't a 'one size fits all' situation - everyone is different, and some people don't go on HRT because they don't want it, or don't need it, or can't due to medical issues or other circumstances, and that's totally fine!  If HRT is still something you're interested in though, and it's just the side effects holding you back (in particular the depression and erectile issues), definitely discuss that with your doctor / endo, as you may get different results from other medications or dosages.

Dear Penelope
While there are many good experienced based opinions here about medical matters, because you are wondering about specifics regarding your own unique body and how it will react to HRT it also is always a good thing to talk directly to your doctor to get an expert medical opinion to supplement information that you get here and elsewhere.

Penelope, testicles shrinking noticeably in under two weeks is quite unlikely, I'd suggest that you're experiencing a placebo effect, nothing wrong with that.

As others have said, Testosterone will return pretty much immediately on stopping HRT.

FWIW, I found that arousal and erection were very much a mental game and while I was on HRT but still pre-op I very much wanted to continue to be not only sexual but to continue my relationship with my partner, including ability to engage in PIV sex. I had already been using viagra and continued to and it did it's job quite well. As long as I was able to feel attraction I would feel arousal and if I felt arousal then I was able to have erection and orgasm. I did more or less quickly lose my ejaculatory volume, I missed it but it was a small (tiny) price to pay for peace of mind).

I think try being flexible with yourself and you'll be able to choose between cycling HRT on and off, just stopping or continuing. It is your choice, the thing in my mind is to not let preconceived ideas drive those choices.

One path you could consider, is estrogen alone.  That's the path I'm on.  I'm 3 months in and minimal negative effects to the male equipment - while at the same time positive affects mentally.

Let me be more specific.  My orgasms have changed.  The equipment still functions as it did before.
