Hi there, I'm an academic by the name of Lexi. Am on hormones and want support in coming out to friends, colleagues and my university. How do I go about making contact with other academics who have tips from being in a similar situation.

Hi, Lexi!

Welcome to Susan's.

You might want to check with your local LGBT umbrella organization to see if there are any trans support groups in your area.  The issues of coming out in a workplace are commonly discussed, and are similar in many workplaces.

For your own specific situation, you might want to check with your institution's HR department to see if they have a transition policy for staff members.  If there is an internal HR website, this is a good way to investigate policies anonymously.  Knowing the policy, if there is one, before you start will help smooth the way.  Also know the laws governing employment of trans people in your jurisdiction, since there is so much variation.  Know if you are protected by law or by workplace policy or not at all.

Here is some information that we like to share with new members:

Is there a University sponsored LGBT organization?  Typically there is a faculty adviser or liaison. That person may know the inside scoop on internal University politics.

Hello Lexi,

I am a college trustee and came out while in office and was then reelected.  I think you might find that there are numbers of us in academia where diversity, inclusion and equity are parts of our strategic and required planning.  I served on our national diversity committee for several years and find it takes a bit of effort to turn some national ships of state while my local efforts are more readily rewarded.  I wish you the best and happy to PM with you when you are so able to correspond.  Welcome aboard.
Open, out and evolving queer trans person forever with HRT support since March 13, 2013
