The name Edward Livingston, the eleventh US Secretary of State, probably does not come easily to mind unless you're an obsessive government history buff. His name certainly is not enshrined anywhere in the annals of the modern gay rights movement. Yet, gay folks owe him, and many who followed, a big heart felt "thank you."
