I am just wondering if I eventually go on HRT, will blood thinners have any affect on it. I have a history of blood clots. DVT and PE in each lung put me in the hospital for 4 days in April. I have been on warfrin since. I guess that would be up to my prescribing Dr. Any one have any in sight on this.

Thanks,
Kymmie

Dear Kymmie:
I think it is the other way around, blood thinners "won't" necessarily affect HRT, it "may" be that the HRT interferes with your blood thinners.
It is very true that many medications will interfere with blood thinners but usually the side effect of many of them are to make your blood even thinner, so it is very important to keep getting your INR checked to make sure the resultant number is not way too high, usually the doctors want to keep it between 2 and 3 but each body and each medical condition is unique and it is your doctors that need to be in charge of what other meds (HRT included) you can take and also be in charge of adjusting your blood thinner (warfarin in your case) dosage... and to set the target range for your INR.

For an exact answer that applies to you, your medical condition, and your unique body no one here on the forums is qualified to give you a firm answer.... please consult your doctors....

Wishing you well, thank you for posting your thoughts.

As far as I know,  estradiol doesn't interact with warfarin, but you will still need to work closely with your doctor due to your history of DVT.

A concern with HRT is the potential side effect of estogen causing DVTs.  The risks are greater in women over 35 and smokers.

This is mostly a problem with certain froms of estradiol used in birth control pills and from Premarin, which should no longer be used for HRT.

The oral estradiol form most commonly used in the US (Estrace is the brand name) has not been shown to have this issue, but it is similar enough that the labeling does contain a warning about DVT. Which means doctors will be very hesitant to prescribe it and you may have a hard time finding one that will.
