Hello, everyone!

My name is Ry, and I'm a 20 year old FtM guy. I have a few questions to ask and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Here's some background:

I'm looking into possibly changing my gender, but I have no idea how to go about that. I have already legally changed my name and documents like social security, driver's license, bank, etc. I was born in Georgia though (read that they require GRS), and I currently live out of state. I've previously been on testosterone and have documents from doctors and therapists stating that I'm transgender. I live my life openly as a male and pass (naturally grow a beard and whatnot). My question is whether or not top surgery would count as GRS. I'm really hoping that bottom surgery isn't my only option because I'm VERY uncomfortable with the idea. Also, what's the difference between GRS and SRS? Sorry in advance for my lack of knowledge.

For social security and passport, you do NOT need surgery to change the gender on those. For a Georgia Birth Certificate surgery is required, but you don't have to change that to change your Passport or even your ID depending on the state you live in. For example, I was born in TN and even though I have had bottom surgery I can't change my birth certificate at all, but I was able to change everything else before surgery including my NJ driver's license.

Also, note that for FTM, top surgery is often enough to cover the surgery requirement, but for MTF, either an orchidectomy or GCS is required.

Changing documents depends on the jurisdictions that issue the documents.  In many places, you don't have to update your birth certificate in order to update other identification.  You would need to research the individual requirements for things like your driver's license.  It seems that Federal documents do not require your birth certificate to be updated.

Check with Georgia vital statistics to see what their exact requirements are.  In some places, all you need is a surgeon's letter saying that you had gender confirming surgery, without actually stating what the surgery was.
