I have a question about growing your hair out. I've wanted long hair all my life but my family had that very old school boys have short hair attitude. My hairline has receded but I'm hoping the AAs will stop that once I begin HRT. My hair is about as low N.Y. as it's ever been at the moment. It's touching my collar in the back and I've let my bangs get super long and they are just past my eyes. The sides are past my ears now towards the front but it's kind of shorter as it gets behind my ears. I've always had the back rounded off. How long do you guys think it will take before I can get to just touching my shoulders length? I want to get to a point where I can put it in a ponytail. Am I looking at months or years? Thanks for your input in advance. Love and faith.

Dear Gabrielle:
It took me less than year to get my hair about 2 or 3 inches above my shoulders similar to my Avatar photo.  Then a year later I was able to grow it out to well below my shoulders.  This last spring I had it trimmed back to just above my shoulder level and just last month I trimmed to back to what you see now.

All of this really depends on just how long your hair is now on average... it sounds like you are starting out a little longer than I did.
Personally I like my hair the length it is now but I may grow it longer again.....  women like change!!!!

Danielle,

I love your hairstyle in your avatar. That's a super cute look. It looks like it's about two or three inches longer than mine at the longest part. Of course yours is even all around and mine is growing out from a typical male type of style. So there are some areas that have to grow six inches or more. I don't really think I need it halfway down my back but I would very much like to have shoulder length hair. I would love to feel it tickle my shoulder blades. Love and faith.

The hair on the head grows about 1/2" per month. The hair at the nape of the neck reaches the shoulders quickly because  it doesn't have far to go. I. Great if you are going for a layered style but it takes the sides and front pieces a LONG time to catch up. The bangs that just cover your eyes still have to grow 10-11 inches more to reach the shoulders which translates into 2-3 years with the occasional trimming of split ends.

Gabrielle this is old from somewhere else thought I'd post it here for fun. It's been over three years since last cutting hair for new job (which have now recently quit!) and all can say is "Be Patient". Sorry parents are non-approving they must not be from the sixties!

Ya Know Yer Hair Is Getting *Way Too Long* When . . .

  • ya can easily cut the split ends yerself.
  • you sit on your own hair in carseat or high cozy chair (with back of shoulders so ya can't "tilt head forward")
  • you cannot find a *scrungie* (pony tail tie) and ya go into a "panic attack"
  • ya can reach and grab it behind back
  • 11 yr daughter *depends on you* to do her hair
  • *somebody* is constantly telling you to "quit twirling, playing with it"
  • "daddy" doesn't dress like a girl but kids say i'm looking like one none-the-less (and they also want to know WHY it doesn't grow anywhere else?)
  • you always swore you'd never do it but are considering *coloring those grey strays*
  • ya *hate* windy days
  • SO / spouse says "in AM you take forever" & "showers are very long"
  • Have NO CLUE where to cut it if wanted to
  • When . . . ?
"But it's no use now," thought poor Alice, "to pretend be two people!
"Why, there's hardly enough of me left to make one respectable person!"

I used to have long hair in my teens (thank you 80s heavy metal)... at the age of 15 I had it shaven... took me a little under 2 years from shaven to shoulder length.
Don't hate the hate... Start spreading the love.

K,

Thank you for sharing your pictures. I would have to say my hair is similar to your starting point. It might be just a bit longer on the sides. So I'm looking at two or more years I imagine to reach what I would call the ideal length. That really helps me visualize it. I love your current style and I love that pink sweater in your third picture. It's very warm all the time where I live but I'd love to wear a sweater like that 💜💜.  Love and faith.

Holy heck, Gabrielle, forget about timelines. I've grown my hair from quite short to quite long several times over my life and and the worst thing you can do is worry about how long it will take. Hair is wonderful, but not the biggest thing going on in your life. Spend a few months applying your entire attention to other things. Suddenly, be looking in the mirror and have beautiful long hair. It's like watching water boil. It'll happen, but put your mind on other things.

You have a very good point Lyric. I do have many more important things to worry about in my life. In fact, what you said is very true. This morning when I woke up and walked into the bathroom for my morning shower. I looked in the mirror and my hair was everywhere but at the same time it was actually kind of cool looking. It was almost like it was styled with curls and all that. It kind of bounced around if I flicked my head a bit. It's getting a little easier to see Gabrielle staring back at me these days. So many things are swirling around in my head. Worrying a bit about my hair is kind of distraction for me from some of life's tougher challenges that I face. Thanks for putting things into perspective for me. Love and faith.
