GCS in late 40s/early 50s

So I just learned that my work insurance covers GCS.   I self-payed orchi 12 years ago because that was just all I could afford and like, I gave up ever having GCS because my insurance didn't cover back then. 

For women in your late 40s or early 50s who had GCS, how did that go for you?   What was your experience and recovery time?  Any age related gotchas or hiccups either before during or after surgery?

I am going through it right now and it is challenging....being fit and healthy is a must. I am 5 weeks out and I am as fit as I have ever been. There are a number of women here who have completed their GCS and are more qualified to talk about post op than I am...

Hello feedmecurry, welcome to Susan's!

I had GCS earlier this year and I am now 55 - no complications.  There are some differences in surgery techniques but I walked 3 miles (5km) four days after surgery.

GCS would have been more difficult when I was 30, when my waistline was 16" (41cm) larger and my BMI was 36 instead of 24. 

You recently joined, so I'll add information to help with navigation and site guidelines.

Late 50's here. No big deal. I actually enjoyed 95% of the whole experience. Doctors will want you within a certain BMI range. People can have different issues, you just never know, but any procedure has some risk. Welcome to the site. My name is Moni if I can answer any questions, I would be happy to help.

I don't think 50's is much of a problem if you're in good health and are determined. Have a read of this post, from a member who was 67 at the time if I remember correctly. All 3 surgeries simultaneously.

Had it done in my early 60's.  No issues.  The only "gotcha" was that I wished I had acted sooner!

Hi, I had surgery at 54. I recommend that you take hydrolyzed collagen 20 grams a day ( start a month or two before the surgery) to help in healing the skin (great for nails and hair too).

I was in great shape for the surgery. During surgery I had a complication due to extremely low potassium and low magnesium. I have my blood checked and am in proper levels.

I had GCS 11/1016 and had complications due to extremely low blood pressure, almost no potassium (never an issue in 3 years of blood tests). My heart rate resting was 52 and I was in very good shape. I was closed up a week later in Dr. McGinn's office. 6 months later I had labiaplasty.

My graft partially died and in April 2018 I had a revision. The doctor also gave me some labia majora definition and a free butt lift (Awesome) and redid my labiaplasty (absolutely beautiful). Last Monday (1.5 weeks ago) I had a procedure by Dr. McGinn to cut a piece of skin at the bottom of my vagina that was identified in I think June. I elected to wait to the end of October to have it cut. When cut it freed up about an inch of bottom vaginal width by an inch wide. It is healing now.

I had 14 visits with Dr. McGinn and her staff since my closing 1 week after GCS. I have an operation scheduled April 3 or 4th 2019. This will loosen a lot of skin on my thighs and around my vagina and she will have my vagina close inward at the bottom. My vagina is looking good and it will be very very nice when the doctor is done.

I also had my BA with Dr. McGinn and they look awesome.

Dr. McGinn has only charge me for the GCS and BA. I can not put into words how well she and her staff have treated me and helped me. I am very lucky.

I also have 2 vocal operations during this time period. One when I was awake on fentanyl and local numbing when they cut my neck open and repositioned the cricoid behind and above the thyroid cartledge and a second operation which was a glottoplasty under general anesthesia.  I had FSS 2 months prior to GCS and 2 rounds of hair transplants during the past 2 years.

I am intersexed and had pretty much an innie penis, think an innie belly button and it is a procedure named after me.

I had GCS, closed a week later, labiaplasty, major revision an office procedure 1.5 weeks ago and another operation in April and a BA.

Surgery last year at 66. Wound healing was absolutely amazing. No granulation at all.  I had some nerve issues prior to the surgery and have had some afterwards but I knew that was a very real possibility. Very orgasmic and I look great. . .

Had mine a year ago at age 47 and no issues or complications. I'm extremely happy with my outcome.

I went back to work part-time at 4 weeks post op and full time at 5 weeks. My pain wasn't that bad, except sitting up in a chair the first 2½ - 3 weeks. A lot, of course, depends on your surgeon. Mine was Dr Rachel Bluebond-Langner at NYU.

I had GCS at age 63, full depth vaginoplasty. I followed care instructions, made sure I had support for the first few weeks when I would be most severely restricted, and had no problems.  A year later, I have an appointment next week to see about the 'stage II' labiaplasty and related cosmetic tweaks.

Surgery was through Kaiser NorCal, Drs Selim (reconstructive plastic surgeon) and Thomas (Urology surgeon).  They did train under Dr Meltzer.   My surgery was an early attempt at a single pass procedure, with the understanding that there was a definite possibility I would need a revision.  Sure enough, the clitoral hood and labia minora quickly shrank away within a few months of surgery, leaving things a bit exposed and prone to easy irritation.

What's left of the clitoral hood is a small wrinkle above the clitoris, and the labia minora are just part of the labia majora now.  I think this will be a straightforward correction now that swelling in the area is gone and tissues are well-healed.

Glad this something you knew might happen and not completely unexpected.  I can easily understand you needing a clitoral hood for anything rubbing on it can make it sore quickly; the hood is there to protect the sensitive organ.  There is a great variation in the size of labia minora and I can see you wanting to have at least a some labia minora.  I hope you have great results
