US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez turned up on a viral Twitch livestream of Donkey Kong 64 to talk about trans rights.  UK-based YouTuber HBomberGuy (Harry Brewis) has raised more than $200,000 for transgender children's charity Mermaids with a non-stop playthrough of the Nintendo 64 Donkey Kong game, beginning in the evening of January 18.

The stream, which had featured guests including whistleblower Chelsea Manning, had been live for more than 50 hours when Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a surprise appearance via a Discord call.

The newly-elected Congresswoman, who has earned a strong following online, spoke about the importance of trans rights, adding: "Trans rights are civil rights are human rights. . . ."

This is like the most 2019 thing ever and it fills my lungs with hope for the rest of the year. Hbomberguy (Harry) is a peach and he's part of this rising crop of amazing content creators including Contrapoints that are swinging the narrative in our direction and winning hearts and minds back to the side of reason. AoC was delightful and inspiring in her short time on the stream and has shown that there is a way forward from the old guard. I marvel at the Donkey Kong 64 of it all. These kids don't need fancy galas or telethons. They just have to put on a video game to stir others to action and save the world XD

There is still hope that the US will one day catch up to the UK in its ideas of trans people being people!
