"Mitt Romney's candidacy took a major hit following the discovery of statements he made a decade ago that imply he isn't sickened by gays."

That was just yummy!! I would think that to get back in the race he really does need to slap some person who represents a minority of some sort!! Perhaps he could join a gang of 'gay bashers' to restore his cred.

How we worry about such NON issues.  There are so many problems to deal with and we can only focus on phobias and hatred.  This was pretty funny wasn't it?

I think the answer to that is pretty scary.  In that, given the problems confronting us, none of these people have the slightest clue as to how to solve them.  That's kind of the dirty little secret.  And indeed, some of them, save divine intervention, are not going to be solved.  There is no solution to the problem of Radical Islam sort of all out war, and even among the non-radical populations, there is a conflict that a few position points is not going to bridge.  The current financial crisis - which has many aspects and layers, but lets just take one - that a substantial number of people have bought houses that are in fact, worth less than they paid for them, and that the price, artificially inflated over a period of ten years, is now dropping, has no 'sound bite' solution.  That the staggering increase in demand for oil on a world wide basis, coupled as it is to an ever decreasing amount of a finite resource is not sustainable, and the only path seems to be one where energy is going to be beyond the ability of most people to afford in pretty short order has no easy solution either.  So, they talk about 'family values' something that of course, they have no power over in the first place.

You've nailed it Tekla.  They focus on issues that make the blood boil. They effectively use non important wedge issues that can incite and divide.  They've really learned how to do this.

Many of these problems can be solved, but it takes a reasonable discussion. Unfortunately, the average joe bloe out there can only take in a thought expressed in two short sentences.

"They" always have. The Federalists focussed on immigration by French and other sorts of 'revolutionaries.' The Jacksonian Democrats focussed on 'nasty elements' like native people in the eastern states. Then there was Irish undesireables and the 'threat' from Mexico. More 'savages raping our wimmen,' Jews, Eyetalians, Cathlics, Mormons, esatern Europeans, frightening 'free lovers' and 'commonists,' blacks, hispanics, gays and gender variants, 'hoomanists,' Illuminata and hippies. A witches brew of fear and loathing that USA has operated with at least since Washington left office if not before.

Our politics and our foreign policy has forever been based on fear and loathing while the power is hidden and disguised.

I think the best thing I ever saw as an analysis of it all was a clip from South Park that Michael Moore used in Bowling For Columbine about 'white men's fears.' Hilarious and serious all at once, and really pithy analysis. Spend four minutes or three and watch it sometime.

One of those laugh and cry simultaneously things. Just like this one is.

Oh, the scrolling text is priceless too.

...director says biggest challenge of new movie portraying post-apocalyptic L.A. as more horrifying than real L.A.....

Its too bad.  I liked his ideas about capital gains taxes.   :P

A great idea for him, for sure.  Most Americans do not have capital to make gains on.  Capital gains are, at best, unearned income, and should be taxed, at least, as much as labor.

yeah but that adds more incentive to start saving and investing.  When it takes so much to save money and invest, I don't agree with the gov't taxing the heck out of small investors.  How can the little guy get ahead when the govt takes nearly a quarter of your profit, if you manage to make one.

The government should insure that the monetary system is sound.  That the five bucks you stick in today is still worth five bucks five years from now.

Here is a dirty little secret - one they all know, but lie like a rug about.  To wit:

You think gas has gone up in price?  How much has it risen since 2000?  A lot right?  Wrong.

Gas costs EXACTLY as much in gold now, as it did then.  The price is stable.  What is going on is the dollar is worth a lot less.  An ounce of gold when bush 2 took office was between $250 and $300, today, is is close to $900.  That is a hell of a profit there.  Other precious metals are similar.

I know its really scary actually about the dollar decline.  Pretty soon it will be more expensive in thailand for SRS than it is here.

For the first time in anyone's memory you could not find a hotel room in SF right before Xmas.  Which is our least busy tourist season.  Turns out they were filled with people from Japan, who could fly over, rent a room, shop for Xmas and STILL come out ahead of what they would have spent in Japan.  NYC had a similar deal going with Europeans.

Heck, the US dollar is now worth less than the Canadian dollar, or Loonie for the first time in history.

But all we hear about is how much they go to church.  Like they are running for the parish council, not the presidency.
