Hey guys,
I'd like to know how you apply gels at summer? I sweat a lot in heat, even right after taking a shower.
Or if you're on holiday and want to swim but 6 hours haven't pass?
How do you deal with these?
Thanks

I make sure that I rub my gel in until its dry to the touch.  If I sweat, at least I know it's been applied as best I can.  I'm on generic AndroGel, and it says I can shower after 2 hours.  I've not heard of the "six hour window" before!  Is that what your gel advises?  If so, maybe you should apply it before bed.

Good luck!

I'm on Testim now, and it says 6 hours before showering or getting water on the applied area.
It also advises to apply it in the mornings, but it's a good idea to do it before bed, I'll ask my doc about it next time.
Thanks! =)

Hi Gentlemen,
I am a transwoman but I hope my gel experience can offer some help.
I find in the tropical heat application to under arms, abdomen, inner thighs or buttocks doesnt dry out totally and hormone levels stay up in the range as a result.

Also I have tried gel application before bed - this seems to work as well . The gel does need the 2 hour window as you suggested and absorption goes on as you sleep.

My estrogen comes in sachets probably much like your T.

Kindest regards, Kirsten.

Unfortunately, AndroGel (at least) can't be applied in those areas.  I tried to put it on my inner thighs once...on MAN, the BURNING was HORRIBLE!  :embarrassed:   AndroGell looks and smells a lot like hand sanitizer, so the alcohol in it may be the reason why.

It is recommended to be applied to the upper arms and then you wear a t-shirt or some other shirt with sleeves overtop of it so that there is no chance of someone else getting accidentally exposed to it.  Since I have a tattoo on one arm, I put it on the inside of my upper arm, and then on the regular place on my other arm.  I think I'd put it on at night and they wear a t-shirt if I had to wait six hours to do anything!

I'm not familiar with Testim, maybe the specs on it are different.

That is interesting Ryuichi, I was unaware of the arm application areas. That really does put a slant on the application method.

Testim is also should be put on shoulders and upper arms, but I put some leftover gel on thighs and it didn't burn so that might be good, thanks for the idea, Kirsten!
Thanks for all the input! =)

I would apply it at night, if it's too bothersome during the day.

I'll do that thanks! =)

I realise you are asking for gel techniques and I'm not trying to pull this off on a tangent.
Out of interest, since gel is giving you problems, have you considered injections?

I'm on injections, self-applied and it is very easy for me at least, no issues.

I've been on injection for 6 years maybe, but my hair started thinning radically now and recently had hysto. My doc thought my dose is too high and I can even use half of the gel.
I'm trying gel now, and might go back on injection only for summer. (I used Nebido which is enough for 12-14 weeks).

You might simply have male pattern baldness.  Are there any bald men on your Mom's side of the family?  It's usually passed on through your Mom's genes, so if there are, that might be why you're having thinning hair problems.

Either way, good luck!

None of the men are alive on my mom's side, but she said they had pretty decent hair til the end.
I'm trying to save what's left :')
In addition I have a few trans friends who use Nebido for years and they started lose most of their hair around 6-8 years on it. I'll see if the hairloss stops somewhat.

I take Sandrena daily.
Because I don't want to risk my boyfriend getting affected by my hormone use I apply it to each cheek until dry to the touch, that way he can cuddle me without risk of being affected because it's entirely under my underwear :)

What an idea :D didn't think about that before

I take it you mean "buttcheeks?" ;)  That's a pretty cool idea, to be honest. 8)

My gel is supposed to be most effective if I put it on my upper arms.  I'm guessing because the skin there is so thin, so it gets absorbed pretty quickly.  I wear a t-shirt nearly all the time, so the chances of my partner getting an unwanted dose is pretty low.

Just a quick note on arm application of hormone gels...when using Sandrena after about 12 months on the arms I began to get screwy blood test results that indicated my levels in the thousands and I was even accused of self medication. It turns out that Sandrena gel will build up in the fat in the arms so when a needle is driven through the skin it picks up concentrations of the Oestrogen and it would require several days without the gel to prevent this from happening. I do not know if this is the same for the T gel but maybe worth some further investigation.

I think that since most of us are only on T for our HRT treatment, the chance of cross-contamination such as you described is pretty low.  Androgel or any other gels and creams, because of the rate of absorption are usually designed to be applied on a certain area/s, so putting it on that area/s usually works pretty well.

But, its often a good idea to ask your endocrinologist if another area is okay to apply your T to if you're having problems with the area specified in your instructions.

I used Testogel during the summer of 2010 and 2011, so was a while ago and kinda hard to remember what I did. Also I was self-medicating so had to go a bit on a whim with it. I tried to use it as properly as I possibly could though, cause my gender therapist denied me hrt at all back then, and I desperately dysphoric, but yeah that's another story.

I wasn't swimming back then though. I applied the gel to my upper arms, shoulders and occasionally on my outer/front thighs where the skin is thicker and less sensitive. It didn't sting there and I typically don't sweat in those areas.

Also, I did usually apply the gel at evening shortly before going to bed instead of in the morning. Then being asleep for at least 6 hours, I never had to worry about it being washed off or ending up on other people during the days. Although you would have to be able to stay cool (not sweating) while asleep then. Maybe keep a table fan on? I dunno.

Those two summers back then were not very warm here in Sweden, if I remember correctly. And I'm the sort of person who gets cold very easily so a hot summer is usually a perfect temperature summer for me. Although I do sweat very easily still, even when I'm not warm and also while not even taking T in any form. Meaning pre-T and now 6 months off it. My evening routine consists of taking a bath in deodorant... not literally, but almost.

I still take hormones these days as well, but just a low dose of estrogen in the form of a silicone ring being stuffed up in my hoo-ha, and releasing small doses of estrogen while just sitting in there. Cause my ovaries are slow to wake up from their 5 years long T coma (meaning my natural estro levels are still at rock bottom) and need a little bit of a boost to keep horrid menopause symptoms at bay. So no pills, patches, gels or injections for me anymore. But that ring comes with its own unique issues too, of course.
Mar. 2009 - came out as ftm
Nov. 2009 - changed my name to John
Mar. 2010 - diagnosed with GID
Aug. 2010 - started T, then stopped after 1 year
Aug. 2013 - started T again, kept taking it since
Mar. 2014 - top surgery
Dec. 2014 - legal gender marker changed to male
*
Jul. 2018 - came out as cis woman and began detransition
Sep. 2018 - stopped taking T and changed my name to Laura
Oct. 2018 - got new ID-card

Medical Detransition plans: breast reconstruction surgery, change legal gender back to female.

The past summers were insanely hot, even to the point where I started to sweat right after showering :/ I used to keep a fan on, still it's not easy cooling down. Plus I live in the inner city, where the heat get's trapped in the concrete jungle.
I would love to live in Sweden though =) plus the weather is kinda perfect for me lol
Good luck with your journey!
